I have this tablet for a kid and it is (in my personal opinion) the bare minimum processing power and RAM that my financial situation allows me.

Although customized with the heavy Samsung skin we all come to love or hate, it's speedy enough that I have had no freezing and only occasionally lagging while switching apps or launching something from a cold boot. It fully integrates with Google Parental Control (I ignored their kids mode because I don't like it), it allows me to control content, apps, monitor time usage, etc.

One more thing I forgot to add about Samsung's software, I paired Bluetooth headphones for my kid and was exceptionally delighted to find you can set max volume and lock it with a pin code. Thumbs up Samsung!

The screen is LCD but does not look milky at all and has acceptable black levels, speaker is fine and gets loud enough without distortion that we have to ask kids to lower the volume LOL.

The tablet is great, we lost the pen in no time even when I was watching its whereabouts as a hawk, I left the responsibility to my wife for a day and they lost it. While we had the pen, we did some sketches and it was awesome, it really is a good starting tablet for kids.
This here is a great, great summary, thank you.

I have to also make emphasis that I brought the financial situation because it is absolutely a game changer for everyone. A person in my extended family says that an iPad ($400dlls) is the bare minimum and that he would never buy Android because all he had contact with is Fire tablets, and let's face the cold truth, Android tablets just recently became good at reasonable prices.

The Fire tablets did way more damage than good to the Android ecosystem, since it is one of the most known tablets, a lot of people out there thinks about iPads as "good" and Android tablets as "trash". You can thank Amazon for that, bloating every device with crap software and no immediate access to the Google Play store.
When they say bare minimum, I believe they're implying its the bare minimum speed/useability wise to be a really useful device that is never inconvenient to use. I've owned a Samsung tab s6, Fire 8, and Fire 10 before, and the fire ones aren't really snappy at all. Also the fire tablets are just harder to use compared to Samsung's android OS since it's always wanting to throw ads and submenus at you. The Fire Tablets are good values when you get them on sales, since a sub $100 tablet that works okay for Netflix and reading is a solid deal. But if you try and use your tablet in the same way most people use their phone or computer (web browsing, watching media, smart home apps, gps, random small games, sending emails, parental controls, bright enough to use outside, casual drawing, etc), this really isn't very much of a comparison.

Not to shame anyone who uses a Fire Tablet, it's just a completely different market and use case. A kid could be happy with either, it just personally depends on the parent and what they want the tablet used for with their child, or if they wanna share it with them. I love my Tab S6 (not lite) very much as an adult lmao, and I don't think 90% of people will need something more sophisticated than that or even an S6 Lite, which still runs reasonably well for pretty much every common person task

Not surprised. I've left the pen behind a couple of times on my s7+ and I'm generally very good at being wary of that. It's just not very securely attached when using just the magnet.

I'd recommend a case that keeps the pen securely inside the cover which is what I am now using.

I decided to buy this! Lowest price I've seen it in awhile. Still sad I missed out on that crazy S7 deals a few months ago. Replacement pens are only $25 too with education discount. I've been trying to decide between an iPad/Apple Pencil and this for note taking, but this is much cheaper and I like the S-pen on my Note, so I think I will like taking notes with this.

Pen orientation matters. I use a turtle armor with my 6s lite (that i use for work and lite gaming) and found that the pen sticks a LOT better when the tip faces up.
These arent bad tqbleta, i bought 7 last christmas and one was a dud. Samsung has been impossible to work with over the one that died, but otherwise yay.

Thanks for the great review. How might this compare to an Amazon Fire tablet for kids? Our older Fire 8 is so slow and we are looking to upgrade and this seems a decent but much more expensive option. Would hate for it to still be "bare minimum" at 2-3x the price.

What about locking the brightness? I always find kids with max brightness tablet/phone and their nose practically touching the screen.

I just looked in the tablet settings and I couldn't find anything. I also googled it and nothing came up. On the other hand, the volume limit does come up if you search for it... So I'm concluding that the option doesn't exist.

There's is however something called "Eye comfort shield", I noticed it when looking around to solve your question lol, it appears to be a "blue light filter", the screen color became a tad bit warmer. Thanks!

I also recommend that you get the kids used to dark mode, I noticed that it significantly reduces eye strain when I'm surfing Reddit regardless of the time of the day, as well as reading during night time. This tablet has it.
