No, just connect it to google voice. Google voice offers free phone numbers. If you want emergency services there is a yearly fee. I think its like 10 or 20 dollars.

Yes, you can. I have the one with 2 phone lines. One google voice for the home phone that I rarely use and another for my 4 in 1 printer fax that I use very often.

Also in March of this year they said mobile carriers themselves are now actively blocking SMS forwarding from GV numbers thus it's kinda out of Googles hands.
