No auto-shutoff. For 8 bucks more this one [bestbuy.com] has auto-shutoff and "brew later" scheduling

This is an excellent, inexpensive small coffee maker. Been using it since January and love it. Quite the SlickDeal!

So I've been drinking 2 cups a day out of a french press for a few years, I have freakishly low cholesterol, but I heard that method can raise it so I've been thinking about getting a regular brewing machine and save the french press for sometimes. Anyone think this would be a good pick or have other recommendations? I like strong coffee. Would a pour over system that's all the rage with the hipsters be better or just more complicated?

EDIT: I don't think I want this one. Reviews mention a plastic taste. Still open to suggestions though...

If you have a decent coffee grinder, I'd go with the pour over. It couldn't be simpler.

Cool. I will investigate.

Thanks.

I got a deal on a Bella coffeemaker a year ago. It was like $25 for a $100 coffeemaker. It consistently made the worst coffee I've ever had. Ended up buying a refurbished moccamaster for $200 after that. Which consistently makes amazing coffee (with the right grind). Moral of the story, when it comes to coffeemakers, you get what you pay for. If you care about coffee, start your search here: https://sca.coffee/certified-home-brewer

IME Bonavita's ~$110 brewers are rather decent. America's Test Kitchen agrees. Relatively inexpensive and quite consistently good.

While the type of maker makes a difference, I've found that the type and grind of the coffee is more important. If you have the time, grinding fresh makes a world of difference. And buying coffee that I like is really important. Type of coffee is definitely a personal preference. I've made some really good coffee, IMO, with a cheap maker and some really crappy coffee with a much more expensive maker.

I've got this model. Definitely nothing fancy but it works well enough for ten bucks and the coffee tastes fine to me..

Looking at the google reviews, this Mr. Coffee seems to have some leakage issues every now and then. It's also black vs. stainless steal, so that might be a factor for some people. For $18, if I didn't have a few smart plugs laying around I'd probably go with the Mr. Coffee you suggested.

I went ahead with this coffee maker, a Bella toaster ($10 after "student" $10 off promo), and a waffle maker for $20. Thanks OP!
