These should be CMR: https://www.seagate.com/internal-...-smr-list/
Two months ago from a different retailer deal I got couple of these, had CMR iron wolf drives inside, all 2021 production date.

I'm a little confused here, I think the same drive was available for much less not too long ago at $170:
https://slickdeals.net/f/15014371-10tb-seagate-expansion-desktop-usb-3-0-external-hard-drive-170?src=SiteSearchV2Algo1

and if you're willing to go WD it's even cheaper at $150 historically:

Am I missing something about this specifically?

Yes. All larger capacity hard drives particularly 10tb and over currently on short supply and much more expensive due to 'chia crypto farming' craze . Google it.

Exactly. You'll be hard-pressed to find any 10TB+ for $20/TB or less. Chia network is as 25EB and growing ~1EB/day. Thats 1,000,000TB/day!

Yep, I was about to comment on that. But give it a little time, prices should come back down. Chia's hype is dying down. Check the sub-reddits, people are giving up. There is no guarantee of income whatsoever, since it's more like a bingo game (or some say a lottery). Things might change with pools. But the official pool has been getting delayed. Things not looking good for Chia. Of course, there are those die hard that will say otherwise. Guess time will tell. Chia did get a meteoric start but things seem to be fizzling out. Best of luck.

i thought HD prices seemed weirdly high overall. Thanks for the info

Since I only need 8TB atm I'm going to go with this Costco item instead https://www.costco.com/seagate-ba...58004.html

I hope you're right... but I also remember people saying that prices will come back down after the HDD factories recover from the flooding several years back. Price per TB never came back completely Frown.

I think the days of $150/10TB are gone for good.

I just received one that I ordered a few weeks ago at this price and turned out to be CMR, Seagate Barracuda Pro.

I had an 8-yr old 3TB Seagate drive that suddenly failed 3 days ago, makes clicking noises and cannot open. Second Seagate external drive to fail. Now I'm reluctant to buy another Seagate.

8 years isn't a short lifespan for a hard drive. I wouldn't use that as proof of something negative.

Don't buy into the price gauging. Prices are already starting to come back down and supply is coming back.

all this crypto/chia nonsense is just a fad.

Drive is loud, noisy, and literally vibrates...as in the whole case does...gives me 1995 vibes and even rubber feet did not help. Really disappointed considering the price and the official purpose.

I don't use hard drives for more than 5 years before replacing them or at least backing up the data to newer drives. Pretty sure most don't.

8 years is amazing.
