I have had this model, and although the recipe book that comes with it is wonderful, especially paired with a digital scale, I have to say I am no fan of the loaves it produces. They have a metallic flavor to them which i could not get rid of.

Are you using tap water or pure/good filtered water? Are you using enriched bleached flour which has iron and minerals added or pure unbleached King Arthur flour? I had a similar problem that you have but I switched to King Arthur flour and it fixed the problem. I also now use filtered water and I can't taste a difference but I know there is a slight difference since I'm not adding as many trace minerals as tap water has.

How long does the bread process take from start to finish? Also, how much money do you realistically save? I buy 2 huge loafs from Costco for like $4 for both.

This takes up serious counter space. You've been warned. Definitely not for small kitchens.
Yeah this thing is huge. 10.5 x 18 x 12.88 inches. I have a medium sized kitchen and I have no room because of all the other things I have.

Not everyone knows what saving money is.
If you thing Costco's bread is good enough, you can't save money from making bread by yourself considering the time and tool you invest.
On the other hand, if you want to get a very fresh bread, then this one saves you a lot. In fact, I think bread, just like coffee, is only good in the first 30min after cooking finishes.

I have mixed experiences with this one.
As a break maker, it has premium quality. The loaf pan itself is heavier than a cheap bread machine. And it has two kneading blades, very rare now. Two blades knead much better and faster than the single version.
The kneading blades, however, are in bad quality. I have replaced three blades in the past three years. Fortunately, it's quite cheap, and you can buy this part directly from the manufacturer and shipping is free. I think it's a design flaw.

Wow how times have changed. Bought the non plus version for $182 in 2018. Solid breadmaker though if you're looking.

I have been using zojirushi bread makers for about 20 yrs.

Weighing your ingredients is the way to go.
Keeping your yeast refrigerated or frozen is critical. ( but make sure get it to room temperature)
My Favorite is the HAC-10. I get them off Craigslist usually for usually less than a $100 bucks.
I like to measure out the dry ingredients into ziplock bags and have multiple ready to go. One time hassle. Can freeze them too. Then just add water /butter or oil pour in the dry ingredients add yeast. start and 3 hours later ready to go.

Key note- keep track of your recipes if mix is smearing after 5 minutes of mixing or not forming a ball add a tablespoon of flour at a time until stops smearing around bottom.
Also this measuring cup makes it so much easier too..

This was regular price with a 20% off at BBB a while ago. I got this bread maker for my folks around Feb and they absolutely love it. You can still get it for 290ish at BBB after the 20% off of you're worried about fakes or anything.

It appears people make fake mugs, but those require much less effort. It's fairly unlikely to make a good fake bread machine.

But it's directly from Amazon, so I wouldn't worry about it much, if you're concerned, just look it over
Amazon is exactly why you should worry. Inventory is shared, so any fakes would go on the same warehouse shelf

If these are being faked

It probably costs less than a dollar a loaf between ingredients and electricity to make fresh, but what you get is quite different than store bought. Comparisons are pretty apples to oranges.

You get two to three days of sandwiches from fresh bread followed by a day or two of garlic bread/French toast… then croutons/bread crumbs. It tastes amazing when it's fresh and is usually too hard to eat by the end of the week.

Commercial breads typically have preservatives and/or hydrogenated oils and stay soft until mold takes over.

Whether it's cheaper really depends on what you're looking for.

not really. i can buy loaves of bread for $1 or less. fresh bread is good if you can eat it right away. by the next day, it is mostly stale. i bought dough conditioners and used vital gluten but neither helped keep the bread longer. if you're looking for really soft bread, the pans in these bread machines compact the dough and ultimately the bread and won't produce the same result. it comes out denser. compare the short loaves from bread machines to the pillowy large loaves at the store.
