I replaced my DS218+ with the DS920+ last fall with the BF deal, been solid as a rock. I only added the extra 4GB of Synology RAM, didn't want to roll the dice on another brand. I put 4 x 6TB WD Red Pro drives in there, running RAID 5, so 18TB usable with 1 for redundancy. I also added 2 512GB nvme SSDs for caching, but Plex does not utilize that. I have the Plex Pass and hardware transcoding turned on, seems to handle everything I throw at it no issue. I use a Nvidia Shield Pro as the player and everything is awesome.

Damn what a great deal for the 920. $417 on Amazon if you have prime. I would have snatched this up if I didn't pick up a 6 bay 1621+ a few weeks ago for $680. Not that I have any regrets but this would have been the cheaper option for me if I waited.

Just pulled the trigger on the 920. I don't think the $417 price will be getting better anytime soon.

So now I need to get some drives for this bad boy. I'll admit I'm a NAS newbie. Any recommendations on # and capacity of drives that will optimize the usefulness of the box?

I see that Western Digital 4TB WD Red Pro is going for $99 today? How's that drive vs others?

I'm thinking maybe 3 4TB drives in RAID 5 as a starting point? Other ideal configurations that don't break the bank. Thanks for your advice!

I woke up and was going to order from Amazon for the $440. Dropped off kiddo at summer camp and came to buy and saw it for $417.99. Paid to procrastinate in this case :-). Get it while it's a lightning deal.

BTW, it was in my cart for $440 and had to delete to get the $418. Good thing I checked.

I didn't want to chance missing it so I ordered before dropping off the kids. Luckily I was able to cancel and get it for $418!

Go with SHR. You're paying premium for Synology, use their filesystem imo

Drives below. Can't comment on ram, sorry. Personally I'd use what it comes with and upgrade later as needed.

Glad i checked this thread again. I ordered this morning at 440, just cancelled that one and got in on this deal. Don't think it's gonna get much better.

I just got a couple of WD Red 6TB at $120. I thought it's a pretty decent deal.

I also procrastinated this and was reading last night on things to do with a NAS besides backups. Glad I waited and saw the lightning deal this morning. Plus for prime members with a prime card 6% cashback during Primeday.

Bought the DS920+ last year for 550, great purchase, great interface. Well worth the money even more so at this price.

Running 4x16TB seagate exos in RAID 6. Primarily used for media consolidation (movies/TVshows/anime in one place) and PLEX.

Been waiting for this, thanks, picked one up. I have a BH Payboo card, so I get my state tax removed, but Amazon is still a better deal with the lower lightning price, 6% back on the Prime Visa, and I had some gift cards to blow too.
