Fortunately, I don't think a "cloud" connection is required to use this drive.
With any backup drive, I think it's best to connect when you want to backup, backup, and disconnect. Less convenient but I sleep better.
Of course, if this is being used for game storage with Xbox or Playstation, theoretically your games can be restored.
