You should be able to. I am able to do so with my Paperwhite, which I purchased a few years back. There's no expandable storage but books are small so 4 or 8GB is plenty.

This is like reading a book so there is no screen glare or color. It's pretty critical for avoiding eye strain and just feeling like you're using an actual book. If you're reading text, this is superior to a regular tablet.
