Looks like the Wen only does gasoline. Less than ideal for emergencies. Gas can get scarce quickly. Anything similar that can do NG?

Something to note here:

- Running wattage is 9500W gas, 8550W propane. 12,000W is "peak".
- I don't think this is inverter genny. Save yourselves some headache and get an inverter WEN here: https://wenproducts.com/products/...-compliant
You can convert the pulsar to use NG too. Are you a WEN rep?

Yes, you have a couple of options from southern engineering to high dollar kits. The best in my opinion is the $40 carburetor swap (if it fits this model) that will give you tri fuel.

Pulsar does not run on NG either, it runs on LP. If you are looking to simply plug it into a gas line, it will not work unless you already have a large LP tank on your property. And while you can run it on BBQ tank, it will run out much faster than gasoline, so you are not better off here either.

That's what many people gloss over - while many gens are dual fuel, using them on propane involves a performance hit (kW) and they absolutely chew through propane - most people I would guess, anticipate using ~20lb tanks when running on propane and that just isn't going to give great runtime. While not advocated, you can top off gasoline while the generator is still running, not sure if you could rig the same idea to swap propane tanks while running.

This may or may not work for you, but what I did is get a running 7000W champion inverter generator (might be out of price range for a slick deal), and upgraded it with a snorkel gas attachment [ebay.com]. This was a pretty easy upgrade, didn't require to cut a frame, and I successfully verified generator to work on all 3 types of fuel. If I was to speculate, this WEN generator [wenproducts.com] should work as well, since snorkel attachment goes under air filter, and it looks this WEN generator has ample space behind it.

I strongly recommend using inverter generator even if it's lower power. 7000W is plenty. Microwave oven, and every typical plug-in device use maximum 1500W. In emergency it's OK if you don't have full power, you can temporarily live without heavy power appliances. What you absolutely don't want during emergency is to have any of your appliances or electronics fail due to the low quality power.

The notion of "low quality power" is greatly exaggerated IMHO. That is, if you are purchasing a generator that you anticipate using for long periods of time repeatedly (e.g. camping/RV) it's probably wise to go with an inverter, but for general standby use, marginally "dirtier" power isn't going to amount to much since the "damage" is cumulative. A caveat to that would be if you do buy a traditional non-inverter, do some research into the unit's THD and strive for a lower number. Lower (better) is not necessarily more expensive.

I just bought a Generac XT8500EFI last week for $899 on sale at Costco. Is it worth returning for this? I also didn't realize they made generators that run on NG. That would have been smart.

Regular price on these and similar generators are around $1000-1100, and they go on sale a good amount. I had to cancel a couple orders for a Pulsar after they repeatedly lied about stock and shipping times during a previous Slickdeals deal.
This is the same one that Sam's carries for $899 and free shipping every day. Newegg had it for $849 and free shipping a couple months ago.

FYI- the inverter you listed is only 8750 surge and 7000 running watts.

And that WEN is 8750w...."peak" so 40% smaller and not dual fuel. Invertors are better for modern appliances but if someone needs huge worksite genny, does not care about the sound level, or wants to run off propane, than these two products are apples and oranges.

yes if you start with a dual fuel, you can convert the propane side to natural gas, just need a regulator. I converted my WEN DF1100 to natural gas with a kit on ebay and it was able to start my 2 ton upstairs AC unit. Mines hooked up to my gas line using a 3/8" hose and quick connect for BBQ grills. Rule of thumb is take the gasoline rating and knock it down by 20-25% to get an estimate of the power rating on NG. Great thing about NG is you dont have to store and keep refilling. I still keep a couple 20# propane tanks around just in case, just swap the hose back to propane to change it back if needed. Because of the minus 20-25% rating on NG, try to buy the biggest generator you can for your loads.

unless you have very sensitive medical equipment in your home (grandpa on an iron lung), you probably don't need an inverter generator nor a pure sine wave. your TV and computers will run just fine on a normal generator. and they are for emergency use only... i really wouldn't worry about running an inverter generator unless the noise is a serious issue

Not entirely true, at least with computers. It really depends on what kind you have and what kind of power supply it uses. With laptops it's probably not a problem as the adapter probably takes care of the rough AC power (but I'm not 100% sure). And with low to mid-end desktops that has power supplies that don't have PFC, it's probably ok. But higher-end desktops usually have power supplies that have PFC, which requires clean, pure since wave power, as do better UPS's, and they'll shut down if that's not what they're getting. And who knows what peripherals like printers and home appliances and electronics require. I'd go with pure sine wave if you can afford it. Better yet, a generator with a substantial built-in battery, either deep cycle SLA or LiOn, so you don't have to have it on all the time, especially at night, to power things. Do they make those?

I personally have no need for a generator at this time, nor could I really use one, at home at least, since I live in an apartment. But I'm curious, how well would a car work instead of a generator, for emergencies when the power goes out, and for outdoor situations like tailgate parties and car camping, combined with an inverter--assuming you can get the car close to where it needs to be to avoid long or dangerous extension cord runs? Is it a lot less fuel-efficient? It would certainly be quieter, at least with most late model cars.

Also, do any of these consumer-grade generators come with substantial batteries, either built-in or as add-on units, so you don't have to operate the noisy, smelly and toxic generator all the time, and, given technology and price trends, how far away are we from when battery-only "generators" are good and affordable enough to replace gas generators for most home and recreational and even professional uses? This seems especially smart if you have solar at home and often generate excess power.
