I know a lot of people talk smack about the S, but man, I love mine, I'm not one to pixel count, so as long as the game I'm playing is 1080p, I'm fine, looks great on my LG CX, especially when the games are still kicking at 60fps or better.

Also travels well, I'm able to throw it in my bag next to my laptop when I travel and it's great for hotel downtime.

I have no problem with the S's performance. If that were the only difference, I'd already own one. My problem is the measly storage. 512GB, only 364GB left after OS. When a lot of AAA games run over 100GB, that's gonna fill up real quick. You can remedy this by getting a storage expansion card, but that brings the total cost to more than the Series X.

If you're a very casual gamer who only plays one or two games at a time, the Series S may be a good buy. But I'm pretty casual, don't have a ton of games, and I've been struggling with the 500GB storage limit on my PS4 for a couple years now. It can only be worse with newer games.

Its Costco. They are a warehouse retailer. They have paid members and they purchase in bulk. People pay membership fees for access to prices below MSRP. Those membership fees help pay for things being sold under MSRP.

AMD (Xbox/PS5 processor manufacture) just recently released a new upscale algorithm that will be available for consoles. I think it'll add value to the Series S because it can make 1080P look like 1440P or even 4K.

Is this better than the Xbox one x for $250??
Yes in most way but you lose bd disk function and won't be able to play whatever games you had as hard copies. Except that series S is way better

Thanks for the alert. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I managed to get enough Xbox gift cards last year when Amazon was running that 25% back in points sale to cover the series x + tax from Microsoft directly. That was a great deal, with quite a bit of hassle, but now I'm stuck waiting for it to be in stock at MS online. Gonna be a while. Knew there'd be delays, but didn't think it'd be this bad when I bought the cards last October.

Series S is overall better than the One X.*

*Except when playing a game that is One X Enhanced and has not been Series S enhanced yet. The Series S will run the game in the original Xbox One mode; while, the One X will run the game in One X mode.

It's nowhere as good as DLSS in its current state and visual fidelity takes a pretty significant hit as its upscaling introduces a fair about of blur. At this time, I cannot not see many console devs choosing this over checkerboard rendering to boost the resolution.

My issue is that the Series S plays backwards compatible games the same as the Xbox One S not the One X which is a huge downer. Even though it's technically more powerful but it has less RAM than the One X which is why. They really gimped the RAM of the Series S. That's what hurts it other than the small storage. Understandable because they were hitting a price point but sucks nonetheless.

The Series S has been a point of contention for developers since the start

The biggest complaint for 3rd party devs was that they were being forced to support multiple platforms - PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, Xbox One X, Series S, Series X, and PS5

When the PS4/Xbox One came out - one year later there was no more 3rd party titles for the ps4 and if there was they were severely gimped.

Call of Duty Ghosts was not a complete package at launch for the PS3/Xbox 360 because it was created with the PS4/Xbox One in mind.

Developers have all stated multiple times, in multiple news outlets, since before the Series S hit shelves - the Series S is forcing developers to put a bottleneck on games

We never will see true next gen 3rd party titles because of the existence of the Series S.

Is the Series S great for people who cant afford a Series X/PS5 Digital? Sure

Will it help Microsoft build the number of subscribers to their digital services like Game Pass? Definitely.

But it's not fair that the majority of people - millions of people - who spent $400-500 on a brand new console generation - should have to deal with compromises

I get they are trying to make consoles like an upgradeable system with plans to keep this gen going for 10 years with incremental updates - ex: Series X Pro/2 etc - but it will be the same controller/UI only the internals would be updated similar to how Dell/Apple updates the internals for its computers without changing the external chassis/design

It's just a poor compromise - the Series S should have been $100 cheaper with no drive just like the PS5. Now they have fragmented the user base and screwed developers over big time - less time for developers to focus on things that matter = buggy, crap games

Best example is COD Black Ops Cold War - the most systems any 3rd party game has been developed for - and it showed - much of it was half baked because the developers were on a crunch to make sure it ran well on all platforms equally so they would avoid the Cyberpunk style backlash if it was advertised to work for an inferior system and it didnt perform well.
Seriously. Go all in or don't.

290 is a good price for series S if you want a budget console for xbox gamepass.

However, if you have a 4k tv, DO NOT get the Series S, either get the older generation one x or wait to get the series X. Series S supports max 1440p resolution and such resolution does not look good on 4k tv.

Note: I owned One X, Series S, and Series X.

I mean, *should* the storage really dissuade people? It's $200 less up front, and if storage filling up is as bad as y'all say, then wouldn't you also run out with the X and still have to buy expansion anyway?

Either way, you're talking about $200 difference at some point.

Microsoft should just use the chips from the Series S that nobody wants and put them in more Series X instead

Exactly the storage alone should dissuade people from going for this

Call of Duty Modern Warfare a last gen title that came out almost 2 years ago is currently sitting at 280GB and counting with new updates 10-20GB added

That's an old generation title now imagine a truly next gen title that will eat up 85-90% of the systems entire storage

Microsoft wanted to get as many people into the ecosystem but forcing developers to cater to a console that is much less powerful than the next gen consoles was a short sighted move that will only hurt consumers
Storage is a real problem on this thing. But if you take a look at the new COD and how its being built, they are starting to add the texture packs separate, and high res components as all options. I bet they are gearing toward a "modular" gaming experience in the future to make them fit on the drive if you want. Basically let the end-user decide if they want the high preformance, or just want save the space.
