I know a lot of people talk smack about the S, but man, I love mine, I'm not one to pixel count, so as long as the game I'm playing is 1080p, I'm fine, looks great on my LG CX, especially when the games are still kicking at 60fps or better.

Also travels well, I'm able to throw it in my bag next to my laptop when I travel and it's great for hotel downtime.

I have no problem with the S's performance. If that were the only difference, I'd already own one. My problem is the measly storage. 512GB, only 364GB left after OS. When a lot of AAA games run over 100GB, that's gonna fill up real quick. You can remedy this by getting a storage expansion card, but that brings the total cost to more than the Series X.

If you're a very casual gamer who only plays one or two games at a time, the Series S may be a good buy. But I'm pretty casual, don't have a ton of games, and I've been struggling with the 500GB storage limit on my PS4 for a couple years now. It can only be worse with newer games.

Its Costco. They are a warehouse retailer. They have paid members and they purchase in bulk. People pay membership fees for access to prices below MSRP. Those membership fees help pay for things being sold under MSRP.

If I don't already have a 1S I would be all over this. Not sure how much faster would series S be compared to X1S. Holding out for the series X for now…

As the next gen advances the game development will be bottlenecked by this Series S

The problem with these theories is you can't really get a series X, and many can't afford.

The S buyers will probably be first to get the next gen, maybe Microsoft will actually put in the latest wifi standard that time. Major omission.

Not one to pixel count but owns an LG CX. Scratchhead

How could you do that to an LG CX?

All good points, except buying in bulk for this category of items. Every retailer buys in bulk. Most in quantities that are several times over Costco's. That part of your statement is not a reason why they could be cheaper than MSRP or other retailers.

Nice thing about the CX and good OLED in general is that it excels at taking lower resolution images and increasing the clarity to a point where you really have to be sitting on top of the screen to see the differences. I sit almost 9' from the screen and 1080/1440 content looks pretty amazing to me personally.

I wasnt trying to explain for this category, or product, specifically. Just explaining how Costco works. And yes most major retailers buy in bulk. Some for a large quantity now. Some with a contract for a large quantity over time. Many small waves to fulfill the order. So quantities might be limited or even scarce from the bulk procurement.

The Series S has been a point of contention for developers since the start

The biggest complaint for 3rd party devs was that they were being forced to support multiple platforms - PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, Xbox One X, Series S, Series X, and PS5

When the PS4/Xbox One came out - one year later there was no more 3rd party titles for the ps4 and if there was they were severely gimped.

Call of Duty Ghosts was not a complete package at launch for the PS3/Xbox 360 because it was created with the PS4/Xbox One in mind.

Developers have all stated multiple times, in multiple news outlets, since before the Series S hit shelves - the Series S is forcing developers to put a bottleneck on games

We never will see true next gen 3rd party titles because of the existence of the Series S.

Is the Series S great for people who cant afford a Series X/PS5 Digital? Sure

Will it help Microsoft build the number of subscribers to their digital services like Game Pass? Definitely.

But it's not fair that the majority of people - millions of people - who spent $400-500 on a brand new console generation - should have to deal with compromises

I get they are trying to make consoles like an upgradeable system with plans to keep this gen going for 10 years with incremental updates - ex: Series X Pro/2 etc - but it will be the same controller/UI only the internals would be updated similar to how Dell/Apple updates the internals for its computers without changing the external chassis/design

It's just a poor compromise - the Series S should have been $100 cheaper with no drive just like the PS5. Now they have fragmented the user base and screwed developers over big time - less time for developers to focus on things that matter = buggy, crap games

Best example is COD Black Ops Cold War - the most systems any 3rd party game has been developed for - and it showed - much of it was half baked because the developers were on a crunch to make sure it ran well on all platforms equally so they would avoid the Cyberpunk style backlash if it was advertised to work for an inferior system and it didnt perform well.
That is a giant load of garbage and spoken like a "console" gamer. So let me tell you as a PC gamer for over 30 years, developers use dynamic resolution and other adjustable elements in order to reach an experience. With your logic, you either buy a 3090 or play physical board games. Game developers have minimum and recommend requirements it it doesn't stop someone from playing at 720p at 30 FPS.

The Series S isn't inhibiting any developer. They will scale the elements accordingly.

290 is a good price for series S if you want a budget console for xbox gamepass.

However, if you have a 4k tv, DO NOT get the Series S, either get the older generation one x or wait to get the series X. Series S supports max 1440p resolution and such resolution does not look good on 4k tv.

Note: I owned One X, Series S, and Series X.
The One X has a design flaw where the heat eventually nukes the HDMI retimer chip. Don't believe me, go to eBay and search for broken Xbox One X and start reading the descriptions. Doesn't matter now as MS discontinued the One X and the last ones are coming out of their one year warranty. Everyone that owns a One X is on borrowed time. It starts with artifacts when playing the game, green lines then poof, no display. My brand new One X did it after playing Pubg for a couple of hours. End up getting sent a refurbished and sold it for more than I paid when the plague hit.

interesting to me that the S is already selling under MSRP
Everything at Costco sells under MSRP. That's kind of the whole point. Why would anyone pay an annual membership fee to shop somewhere that just sells stuff at regular price?

And they also have much better purchase terms from suppliers. They have dropped and switched brands in past if they don't get what they want. Public example: Amex to Citi move.

Is this better than the Xbox one x for $250??
Other than smaller storage and not made for 4k gaming, A big YES.
