I have this. On the one hand the concept is great as is the execution. You do truly get a self regulating charcoal burning grill that can double as a smoker or get up to 700 degrees to sear stuff.
On the other hand, when building it, the quality of the components is very evident that this won't last forever as metal is very thin & will certainly rust out sooner than you'd like.
Check out the Char-Griller 980 at the same price (edit: actually Char-Griller is $100 less). Better built and has some improvements learned from letting Masterbuilt go first. Better fire box (fire bricks instead of metal), porcelain coated parts, better manifold, better grease trap design and generally thicker steel as well.
Not trying to threadcrap, honest question- isn't masterbuilt one of those brands that's basically disposable after a few years (rusts out, etc). Even at a discount, I'm hesitant to pay Weber/traeger prices if it's not built to last.

For the size, price point, use of charcoal and ability to sear @700 I really don't believe there is anything out there that can compete.
Do I think it will last years and years, no I don't. But for the quality of food I've made with it, I am happy to pay this amount (well the lower amount cuz I don't need a 1050, just a 560) every few years.

fyi - there are fire bricks in this one. the metal burns away and leave them. not an issue to me - amazing grill, glad i got rid of my pellet grill.
Appreciate the details. As far as price goes though, for $700 though it's at the point where you have a whole lot of higher end options, and definitely at the point where I wouldn't be happy about pitching it after a few years for something nicer.
Options to cook something - not the options this one gives you. It's an amazing smoker that grills well - the best of both worlds. I'll take this over those - I've had those. Just depends upon your needs I suppose.
I own this. Sensors fail. burn off required. Poor engineering. Love the 550 for $300 but it has issues. Id never spend $700 on this. Grease fires cant be controlled which is why a burnoff is required after use. If you disagree please tell me how much you used yours cuz I used mine A LOT. My chimney wall is almost fully burned thru. Great design, poor materials and execution.
Not had any of those issues. The chimney is designed to burn through - to the fire bricks behind it. Yes - not the best quality - but the only one like it on the market (until the recent char-broil). Far better than a pellet grill. I'm fine knowing this will not last forever since the output is so amazing.
I have the Chargriller and am quite happy with it. I was looking at the Masterbuilt series before getting the CG. The 560 size would fit my needs better but I was looking at a LOT of expensive mods.
Given now awesome gravity fed charcoal grills seem to be, I would expect more competitors.
I looked at those mods as well and decided against them. They're not needed. They're cool and fun.... but at the end of the day the grill/smoker functions amazing and they're not needed.
Yep no worries, I got mine as a Walmart display for 187 earlier this year… I've gotten my money's worth! Also if you take reasonable care it's held up very well. Also masterbuilt shipped me replacement parts for items with scratches etc. so no complaints. Best flavor I've had from a home grill ever, I keep the pellet grill because my wife enjoys the ease of it. Masterbuilt is supposed to be doing more enhancements on the furniture models.

Yeah, sorry didn't mean to confuse anyone and imply Weber of traeger have similar models yet. Just meant that there are lots of other high quality grills/smokers in this price range.
And I hope you're right about Weber introducing one next year! The sooner they introduce it, the sooner they can work the bugs out and release a V2. https://static.slickdealscdn.com/ima...es/biggrin.gif love the concept of these, but won't buy one until I can be reasonable confident it'll last for a decade-ish. For those who do buy this, enjoy the smokes with it on the 4th!
there are grill/smokers in this price range - yes, with better quality. there's nothing that compares to the versatility and actual output that this has however. i knew buying it that was the case - i prefer having amazing smoked/grilled output over anything else. and really easy to use which is nice - i sold my pellet grill after trying this.
Can't wait to dump my Weber smokey mountain and GmG pellet rig for something like this. Seems best I wait another year or 2 though
I'm curious as to how fast these snuff out charcoal? I love how fast my Egg can snuff out the coals and conserve tons of charcoal for the next cook.
I highly recommend potential buyers wait on these gravity fed charcoal grills. These hit the shelves last year and it's only a matter of time before a proper brand puts one out that will have quality materials etc.
Masterbuilt and Char-Griller have definitely paved the way, fingers crossed that some quality first competitors take that torch and run with it.
I just went through the gravity grill purchasing process and I chose the Char-Griller 980 over the Masterbuilt. There are many video reviews comparing the two on YouTube.

There are a lot of high quality gravity grills out there if you're looking to spend ~$4k+. Myron Nixon, Royall, Assassin, T&K etc.

Lol oh ya definitely but I'm referring to the more accessible consumer lines, not the pro and competition levels. Also keep in mind that this is also a grill, not just a smoker.
I've been waiting on an improved version of these. The idea that the metal liner is supposed to burn away doesn't seem right. A few of the reviews that I saw mentioned that the bricks underneath didn't really seem like bricks.

Pretty much sums it all up.
