Connecting external displays to an M1 Mac is frustrating and there's no guarantee that the monitor you choose will actually scale to HiDPI.

MacRumors Forum: M1 Mac mini won't recognize manual HiDPI settings [macrumors.com]

Example quote from Macrumors thread: MacRumors Forum: M1 MBP & LG 34 inch ultra wide 5K2K [macrumors.com]

This is complete insanity. The last thing on my mind was worrying about finding a display when buying the M1 mini, but apparently it is the biggest issue. Usable (practical) HiDPI scaled resolutions don't exist or work, font smoothing and sub pixel anti-aliasing options are a thing of the past. So, after MUCH searching (and buying and returning 2 monitors already), I literally have ONE option for clean font rendering and usable resolution for my Mac mini -- the LG 5k 27. And I don't want a 27, I need a 34-wide, or a 32. Making non-retina and non-apple monitors look like garbage is seemingly what Apple intends. I'm sure this is no accident. I already called Apple about this (which was a complete waste of time). I now just want my money back from Apple - enough is enough.

Macworld: How to connect two or more external displays to Apple Silicon M1 Macs [macworld.co.uk]

Here's a 24 page thread on MacRumors if you don't believe this issue is widespread: https://forums.macrumors.com/thre...b.2276345/

Here's the issue posted on Apple support forums with 7.4K upvotes: https://developer.apple.com/forum...login=true

Or the same mac mini for $599 at costco (new)
I was originally doing that with my MacBook pro. In order to use it with the lid closed you had to keep it constantly plugged in. As a result my battery health significantly deteriorated so I bought the Mac mini. On top of the fact that I was using an ultra wide monitor, so when I'd unplug, all the windows would compress back to fit my 15" screen and I'd have to rearrange the windows every time which was annoying.

Awesome deal. Just bought this for $650 with EDU deal from Apple. Selling the AirPod is going to be a hassle and going to be about $80 profit max..
