I was originally doing that with my MacBook pro. In order to use it with the lid closed you had to keep it constantly plugged in. As a result my battery health significantly deteriorated so I bought the Mac mini. On top of the fact that I was using an ultra wide monitor, so when I'd unplug, all the windows would compress back to fit my 15" screen and I'd have to rearrange the windows every time which was annoying.

Bought if from abt.com price matched with microcenter combined with amex deal. Came to 575 with tax final. So amazon deal was inline or apple deal with selling the airpods

be sure to get a TB3 SSD enclosure, so you will have a fast/cheap storage. For Mac Mini, it's not portable anyway.

got one (8GB/256GB) from Costco at $500ish and a MBA (8B/512GB) for $1000ish. They were on sale and they allow you to use those $100 coupon on top of it.

I think 8GB is fine, so far, per smartctl check, mine SSD usage is normal, comparable to my Intel mac.

Yea it's $300-400 more but I do agree unless you have some situation where you absolutely need a desktop, a MacBook Air would probably be more versatile and useful. Personally I'm going to wait for the next Gen. MacBook Air that's supposedly coming at the end of the year with the new M2 processor and available in different colors hopefully.
