I was originally doing that with my MacBook pro. In order to use it with the lid closed you had to keep it constantly plugged in. As a result my battery health significantly deteriorated so I bought the Mac mini. On top of the fact that I was using an ultra wide monitor, so when I'd unplug, all the windows would compress back to fit my 15" screen and I'd have to rearrange the windows every time which was annoying.

I've left my 2012 Mac Mini on since I bought it new. The only times it's shut off are during blackouts. I use it as my Plex server for all my media content. I can't imagine doing that with a laptop as the battery health would have been depleted within the first year due to just leaving it plugged in.

I think it really just depends on your use case. You'd need a bunch of adapters to use the Air on a desktop but you make a good point. The other thing I think of is that the Mini probably has better cooling and some degree of higher performance

Suppose I already have a good monitor, wireless keyboard, and mouse from previous set ups.

I need a stationary setup that is minimal, clean, and connects to some legacy USB-A devices, such as a printer that doesn't do wifi, and external HHDs.

And when I get mobile, I can use iPad Pro, and I don't want to be seen with a device with thick non-uniform bezels that looks it's from 2014.

If I am using at the desk for 8 hours a day, I want it to have good cooling. The M1 is cool and efficient but with MBA screen closed it'll have less heat management. The MBA will take up more space, and even with a stand and USB C dongle, will still look less clean than the Mac mini.

You've obviously have never used one of these new M1 machines. 8GB or RAM is plenty for 95% of users. Apple creates the hardware and software for their products which make them run efficiently unlike other computer manufacturers that rely on third parties to make their products work.

How about 256g ssd then? Cost between 256g and 512g is less than 30$ and Apple charges 200$? An evil and greedy company

if one day there is a retina compatible monitor to buy with this it would be easy decision.
retina compatible monitors: 27" 5k or 21.5" 4k or the new 24" size with whatever display resolution they are using for imacs

8GB is more then plenty of you are using this as a day to day PC. If you need something for productivity then you shouldn't be looking at this in the first place.

Didn't the Amazon in app purchase promo end yesterday?

Thought I read the terms that it ends on June 22nd PST.

Edit:

never mind, looks like the deal was originally spotted yesterday but in the Slickdeals app, they made it look like the deal was posted today on the 23rd.. at least on my phone anyway...

I bought as the Family computer. Plug in and no worries. Plus a bit faster than the air and a lot cheaper. (550 from Costco deal vs 900 for the cheapest air.)
