Lower end Makita models also use plastic, like XML02 and XML05 models.

But actually, plastics can be a plus for residential home owners depending on their yard size because you are looking at a significant weight advantage at a ~40lb machine vs ones that weighs 60-80lbs+. Maneuverability is actually a quite underrated attribute vs a metal deck.

I'm a makita fan boy but even I'll admit ego makes better lawn equipment than makita. But makita does make quality products and the batteries alone make this a deal.

Edit: I thought the $374 price was for four 5.0 batteries not 4.0. It is pricey to me.

I don't think you ever "wasing money on quality". You get what you pay for. I've had two vendors battery systems canceled on me oboleting the my lawn gear (original greenworks 40v, and worx 40v battery systems). Makita has stuck with their 18v system for something like 15 years.

That said this is not a good year for buying the bigger makita mowers. They've just started to roll out their new higher-end 40/80v XGT battery system in the USA. No mowers this year (just a trimmer) but next year I'm sure there will be a mower to keep up with the competion:

Yeah I'd agree with that. using 2x batteries at once (like on this mower, and a chainsaw) was a great idea for people already "in the system." DeWalt also did this with their FlexVolt having 2x systems for the air compressor and miter saw. (notable DeWalt had been terrible in the early 2000's with obsoleting their NiCad systems constantly, from 12V to 14.4 and finally to 18 plug-in, then switching to 18v slide-in Lithium batteries.) Ryobi had the old 18V NiCd but kept the same form factor for 18V Lithium. Greenworks had been real bad as mentioned here. So yeah, people get bitter about buying into systems that get obsoleted.

EDIT: but I'd add that sometimes you have to go to a larger format battery just because of the size and weight needed for that much capacity. So I didn't know about the new Makita system coming, but that's good to know. Also Milwaukee recently came out with the "MX Fuel" system which has much bigger (and more expensive) battery packs. Those are mostly for industrial construction work in the tools I've seen announced so far. I don't know if it will be extended to gardening, but it would make sense.

When the hell is Milwaukee going to come out with a Mower?
I have their trimmer, blower and chainsaw with 5.0, 6.0, 8.0, 9.0 12.0 batteries along with their other power tools.
My 10 - 15 year old gas mower still works fine but would be nice to go all electric since i have the batteries.

My lawn is small to medium sized so how much of a benefit would the extra 3" be for a 21"?
In a "perfect" straight run:

in real life 18" Push vs Self propelled 21"
18 will take about 1.25x-2x as long.

If you wait 'till mid August, Lowe's will be marking down their 80 Volt Kobalt self propelled mower to less than $400. Comes with a 6 AH battery. Got mine for $390 after tax and then got a price adjustment for another $40. Final $350. Although I only have 2000 sq ft of lawn, I can mow both front and back twice before I have to charge battery.

So, tell us all about the warranty on such a "reconditioned" device, thanks.

This is news to me. You're talking about the G-max 40V? Or something that looks like this? (https://www.amazon.com/GreenWorks...B0078KWAAS)

I have a couple of G-max tools myself and am alarmed to see yet another 40V system.

Trimmer kicks ass. Wish i got that combo. Ended up with the weed trimmer/bush trimmer combo. Used to have bushes and then i moved. Lol.
I changed the string out to 1.05. It doesn't auto feed but I carry side cutters with me and manual feed maybe once. The thicker string works great especially edging.

I so want to buy one of these but my gut tells me that ill be disappointed. Less than a 3rd of an acre with some hills and i feel like it would be such a PITA to swap batteries….im deep into makitas ecosystem as well. I just want a powerful but light push mower. currently have a solid briggs self propelled but the bastard is so heavy compared to regular push mowers. Self propelled is overrated. Super unnecessary if u have less than an acre.
I'm 1/4 acre and mow the whole lawn with 2 5.0 batteries. When I'm finished with the mowing the batteries still are at 2 bars. I the rest of the power one for trimming other for the blower.
