Man I've purchased so many Twinkly lights and have had about a 50% defect rate. Either an LED doesn't work at all, one of the colors doesn't work, or it won't connect to WiFi. They were supposed to have a big app update with better customization effects last year but it never happened. Despite all the issues, I still love them. FYI you can only link lights that are the same generation.
Used them last Christmas on my 9ft tree

are these waterproof/outdoor?
They say they are. Does anyone use these outside with an extension cord? I have an idea for putting them on one side of a 15ft Blue Spruce. I was able to wrap around a 9ft tree okay so I am thinking that may work. Wanted to see what the group thought first before diving in. Hoping to keep them up all year as they are so versatile in colors and themes.

expensive Leds wonder when Chinese will replicate these
The Chinese make pretty much all LED's. These and are sold in the US as Twinkly brand, which Twinkly is based in Milan, Italy under LEDWORKS S.R.L. It's hard to tell if they are UL Rated or not. I can't find anything that states they are. They have some certifications for PROP65 California lead testing and other certs, but I can't find a box pic that shows the UL symbol. I know some people on SD go crazy when electrical devices are not UL Listed or certified. Here are their certs: https://www.twinkly.com/certifications/

The Chinese also make all the WS281x pixels for holiday lighting enthusiasts. I had 15,000 WS2811 bullet pixels in my display last year all synched to music. This year I will bump up to 25k-30k (my 3rd year fully decorating with pixels). There are many in our xLights group that do this around the world. Twinkly just allows a more simple app control, although we can us ESP sticks with WLED to have more app control with WS281x lights if needed. Otherwise it's more controller and software based.

This might be an odd question, but here goes:

I already have a Twinkly 600-set that I love, and was wondering if it'd be possible to save some $$ and just open up the end of my Twinkly set and solder/splice in some additional, much cheaper individually addressable string lights.

Basically, I'm not sure if there's some proprietary Twinkly thing that would prevent the app/controller from recognizing the added strings or not. And yes, I know, that even if this were possible, the addition would have to be reasonably limited for power concerns. (that, or I splice in additional power as needed along the length)

Not sure how these are any better than the ws2812 "fairy" pixels from various Chinese sources + something like WLED on an esp8266/esp32. That's how I built my indoor tree.

All my outside stuff was >20k ws2811 pixels fully sequenced with xLights

I'd suggest spending the money on a cheaper set and invest the rest in creating a diffused (reflected) ceiling lighting setup. Staring at bare leds is not great for your eyes…. diffused lighting setups are just so much more elegant and easy on the eyes. JMHO.

EDIT: Nevermind I thought these were for indoor all-season lighting. I Don't think I'd spend$170 on Christmas lights, but that's just me. LOL!

We're kinda picky about our warm white. Will this produce a good warm white or does it feel weird?
IIRC they're basically full RGBW so you can have any white you choose. Just add in as much yellow/orange as you want to hit the warmth you're looking for.

From my VERY limited experience I'm gonna guess no but don't take my word for it. Only reason I say no is my one experience with splicing lights were some strip lights from two different brands that I just did about a month ago. The solid colors change fine and they all work together but it can't handle any of the fancy blinking/twinkling effects which I'm guessing is the main point of these in the first place. It basically just blinks and then turns off. You might be lucky to get any sort of funtionality out of them if you do that.

No.. beginning by the power. For the 600 two 300s come out from the same power module.

Which makes the power supply in the middle like he asked.

Ugh, good to know. We have a strand of their icicle lights and love them. Thanks for the tip on different generations not linking up.

How has your experience been getting them replaced? We've had more than a 50% defect rate with our LifX brand strips. Best Buy swapped two sets for us, but even the replacements don't always last and the manufacturer was shut down almost all of last year so we couldn't go through them. It's been such a disappointment.

I've almost always been able to replace them at the store. I've had to contact Twinkly directly once about a gen 1 curtain that wouldn't complete the setup process. They don't make them anymore and offered 60% off any new purchase. I had to send them money (cash transfer) via PayPal. The whole thing was sketchy. What sucks is, the replacement has a defective LED. I didn't bother contacting them again because it took about a month the first time.

Oh man, I hear you. I purchased some bluetooth smart Christmas lights from amazon many years ago and the app doesn't exist anymore. I was able to find the files online and side load it onto a kindle fire just to get the dang things working. I always worry about these companies just up and disappearing now. However, twinkly seems to be growing very fast (probably explain the defect rate) so hopefully they are around to stay. In fact, they just released some new lightstrip products.

They started on Kickstarter. My original units still work fine. I actually wish they'd do another campaign so I could get something at the similar price savings.

Overall, they're great. Some frustrations, especially if your phone is on a custom rom or even rooted in some cases. After I replaced my phone it was a much better experience.
