okay, want a cookie? lol nobody asked what you did, clearly stated what it was for, not a permanent thing yet you had to try to make it about yourself. It's $20, obvs it's not going to be a replacement for a $500+ microphone lmao do your thing tho, just no need to be so extra about a comment.

I'd be very grateful if anyone can comment on whether going up to something in the $100 range would yield better volume levels.

EDIT: I'm guessing a separate audio interface would definitely solve low volume issues, maybe these recommendations for $110 total would be decent, hopefully another deal on that xlr mic setup will come up soon

I'm using that TC20 mic you linked. Would recommend reading up on the difference between condenser and dynamic mics, particularly if your son is recording in an untreated and/or noisy environment. If you're only recording voice for game clips and streams a dynamic mic might be a way better option. Most people would be quite content with an interface and a $20 XM8500 or $25 BA85A (refer to a youtube reviewer channel like podcastage for a ton of mic reviews). Bring this up because the TC20 (and pretty much all condensers) excel at picking up background noise which can be distracting and annoying to resolve.

This is a pretty poor mic. Got one last time the deal was around. It has some kind of built in "noise cancelling" that can't be disabled. The way it works is when the sound level is low, it mutes the audio. When the sound level goes up, then it unmutes. The problem is that it would take a second or two for it to unmute so the first part of sentences or short replies would be cut out. This was the case in OBS, Discord, or even directly recording in Audacity. And then one day it just stopped being detected by Windows. Neewer took it back even though it was past the return period, but I would still not recommend it for the trouble. We have a Fifine now and it works great.

Thanks for that well-thought-out reply.

Since I actually make money doing VOs I was just pointing out there's a LOT of people trying to do pro VO work and most of them use MUCH better equipment than this
But hey, it's your money, Sherlock. Good luck.
If they're going to attempt pro VO work with it... it's probably pretty obvious they aren't pros and therefore aren't actually doing "pro vo work" with em. And if they try, they should know the industry well enough to know the quality is not it. Now amateurs who are trying to get into vo work... sure, they may use this at first and slowly get better equipment as they actually make money to buy it. Most photographers don't start out with a Nikon D3500... they start off with the camera on their phone, a point n shoot, etc.... find that they love it, then upgrade.

So what would be most helpful is to talk about what equipment is best in the price range that the original post is obviously in

Agreed. I have a Sennheiser MK416 and an Electrovoice RE20...but I've been doing this for a while.

If I were starting out, I'd avoid this mic like the plague...because you're not going to get any jobs off it. It's a piece of junk.

A person would be better off heading over to Americanmusicsupply.com [americanmusical.com] where you can order basic equipment within a budget...on a payment plan, anywhere from 3 payments to 12 payments...depending on the total of the order.

What equipment would I recommend to a beginner?

I'm not.

There's plenty of VO websites out there that talk equipment, and you can figure out what works best for you.

I should add it doesn't matter how good your equipment is if you don't have an acoustically treated area to record in.

If you're just starting out, spending $35 for a month or two at Gravy For The Brain [gravyforthebrain.com]might be worth your while. The information they have is well worth the price. You can check out their free courses before deciding if you want to plunk down money to check it out.

Reddit [reddit.com] has a voice acting community with lots of nice people willing to offer advice.
Voice Over Extra [voiceoverxtra.com] is also a website for information.
Booth Junkie [youtube.com] on YouTube is fantastic. He covers equipment, mic comparisons, how to use Reaper...loads of information for free...and he's fun to watch.

There's several others that offer free information I can't think of off the top of my head at the moment.

Finally...the fun thing about this business is people in this industry are the most fun, cool, awesome people you'll ever meet/work with. I can't imagine OP is a professional because of the attitude they took when offered suggestions. My suggestion to OP is to be polite and say thank you instead of being an *ss. Being an *ss will come back to bite you in yours.

I like this microphone because it is better than my laptop mic and just a good entry level mic with the added bonus of the stand and the cable.

I got one. Stoked the code is still working. I'm not a VO pro or anything, but this will sound better than my built-in mic and less hassle than my video mics. Working on a casual photography instruction video and this will level up audio and workflow.
