Wondering how it compares to the AX3000, since they're currently about the same price.

Presumably there's a reason why someone would pay the same for an AC router vs. AX?

The newer units are supposed to have the 2.4ghz issue resolved. For the most part the forums confirm this. I would try to get a unit made in 2020 or later.
How do you you know the Amazon batch are newer 202O models?

Several reasons: First of all Amazon has been out of stock a few times since last fall which means they had to order new stock at that time. The warehouse unit I got last week was a 2020 model. I think you are safe to run with any of these primary retailers. B and H is matching the price as is ABT. Both of them offer no tax to many states and I know they have also been out of stock in the last six months. Best Wishes..

I bought this two years ago and have been having issues with the 2.4 GHz radio. The signal has degraded and my printer that once good fair signal now won't connect to the Wi-Fi. There's a lot of similar reviews on Amazon. However, the newer hardware versions might be better if they fixed it. Besides this problem, it's still a solid router and 5 GHz speeds are great. I bought it because it got great reviews from SmallNetBuilder.
I experienced the same issue with the 2.4ghz. One of the troubleshoots said to use WPA instead of WPA2 for the 2.4. I did that and so far so good. Sucks that it's on a less secured encryption. I made my 2.4 band as a guest network and only put non-important things, like IoT devices, on it.

Curious about that too, I rather have a "lower end" AX than a high end AC router. Wifi 6 live up to the hype, a single Xfi Wifi 6 Gateway covers blind spots better than my previous 2 RT-AC68U mesh setup. Not sure how that works b/c it is all 5 GHZ technology.
Low end wifi 6 are not very good. Better to hold off for a high end wifi 6 or true 6e in a year

That's exactly what I have now I have been considering, or the parental controls better? What makes it worth it so far? The T-Mobile one has surprising range in my larger new house

I have 2 of these running Merlin since mid 2019. I am running a Mesh Wifi network but have them connected via Cat 6 cable. Best network config I ever experienced in the apartment. No complains, though we only use the 5Ghz AC network. The 2.4 is on but I only use that once every 2 months for the Kindle device. Super stable everything. High speed. Wired I get a full 950-ish down on the Xfinity 800/15 connection. I seem to get about 550-600 Mbps download on Wifi inside the apartment.

I don't really have a reason to upgrade yet so will monitor BF/CM. Moving forward I will likely aim for the AX86U (main router) and the 3000X (Access Point) at some point for a killer deal.

If you need a new router I would go for Wifi 6 and WPA3, don't buy the older, rather wait. That said, if you have this AC86U, like myself, it can probably run another 5 years. It's a beast. Best router I ever had. There really is not a compelling reason to upgrade for me. I have roof access and still get about 100-150 Mbit/s download upstairs through 2 ceilings on the 5Ghz Wifi.

Remember to use AX all your devices need to be able to support that standard as well, with most of them likely do not.

Got one last week on Prime day via the Warehouse for $87. Used Good. It looks perfect and has worked great for the first few days. I replaced a T-Mobile 1900. Spent a few hours flashing the TMobile to the newest Asus Firmware and converted it to an AC68U. I was able to clear the partition and get the newest firmware. Now I will experiment with AI Mesh and/or repeating for my video network around the exterior of my house. The old TMobile router was stellar and I am in fact an Asus fan. Best routers out there. I have been waiting for the AC86u for a year and finally scored this deal.
Absolutely agree with you. Hands down Asus makes the best router. And in my last twenty or so years I have used almost all big brand routers. And this is coming from me who has been using Orbi RBR50 mesh router which is good, but overall pain in arse... Especially for Chromebooks and few tablets they keep disconnecting. So I guess mesh technology is overrated.
I am now waiting for Asus AX5700 or AX6000 deals and will use with my old T-Mobile router in case I want to go for Aimesh.

Maybe I just got unlucky but mine quickly started to run very hot and then become unstable. I had to put two fans on the back of it and have it shut down and cool off periodically. That is the only way it will run reliably and keep everything connected. I do have lots of IOT devices and cameras connected to it and its VPN client is connected to a server full time. I tried to also have it run a guest network and that was too much for it even with the cooling. If the VPN wasn't so awesome I would have junked it a long time ago and switched to an AX mesh.

Personally, I would still prefer to get the 86u as that is an older high end model that had great range. For an apartment, the AX3000 might be preferable if you really need the fastest wireless data transfer possible.

For most people, 2.4 ghz range with decent speed is most important and that is where the ac86u shines.

I got the ax3000 instead; much cheaper and better at meshing; I got it for $100 so made more sense than doing anything with the older generation, has one extra core and the router itself is like half the size!

Not going to strain my mesh without WiFi 6

TMobile used to give away an AC1900 router to customers who had reception issues at home - supposed to be for WiFi calling but hardware is basically an Asus AC68u with custom firmware that hasn't been updated in years. You can flash these to become an AC68u to get updates and other features like AiMesh.

I plan to do that once I get this AC86u router and then use the flashed TMo to create a mesh with wired backhaul.

It's recommended to install Merlin Firmware [asuswrt-merlin.net] on this router. I'm using this with Merlin and with Orbis in AP mode and everything is great.
