Those are basically different ways to get more internet coverage in the house. Spare the technical details, unless Ethernet is available or using the electrical lines in the house with special complex signal processing for carrying communication between the wireless access points, one will need to sacrifice radio bandwidth to serve as the backbone. Newer technology can use higher frequency and will provide higher bandwidth but may also reduce the physical range. Newer technology can also use multiple frequencies to delivered higher speed to more devices. The discussion here is asking if the money spent on the extender will be worth awhile when compared to other solutions.

Good deal but these things always throttle my internet. It could literally be right next to the router and it'll still cut down the wifi speed. Not sure if just me but doesn't seem worth it

That's how range extender work. Best approach would be to go mesh, powerline, or a new router if performance is a major concern.

On the netgear ones you have an option to receive on one frequency and send on another exclusively. E.g. you receive internet signal on 2.4ghz and then you send the signal out on 5ghz. This could greatly increase the speed. Not sure if this one has that option but if it does, take advantage as it basically doubles the speed.

Small Range extenders like these often lack the external antennas and chipset which allows for a full throughput on a WiFi signal which is being repeated.

Making it simple:

1) any extender or repeater will cut your speed in at least half since it takes the number of hops to the main hub is now twice than many.

2) using multiple of these will make the overall noise levels and interference between devices much more noticeable.

Use as few of these as possible and make sure you use ones which have the best "channel availability" meaning 2.4 - 5 Ghz or any other backend to help with the loss in repeating the signal.

I would not recommend this device

Does using the extender only slow down devices connected to the extender? Or does it also affect everybody in the house including those connected to the original/first/primary router?

Newer Asus routers have a built in AI Mesh functionality for this purpose and also have the expandability for custom firmware for enthusiasts like myself

Does not effect primary router.

Get mesh people! Set it and forget it.

think of it like this. router sends out 100 things a second, and recieves 100 things a second.

the extender does the same. sends 100 things a second, recieves 100 things a second. but they have to send to 50 to the router and 50 to the device(your laptop), and receive 50 from the router and 50 from your laptop. so essentially whatever is connected to the extender is getting half the speed.

and i know im going to get corrected on my explanation, cause its not exact, but it explains it well enough for the layman.

so no, it wont slow down anything connected to the main wifi... just the extended wifi. it will work ok for things like wifi cams, and light switches... if you try to stream or make phone calls on the exteded network, youll run into issues.

also a royal pain... phones and laptops will stay connected to a wifi till it reaches 0 signal. so say you have the extender at your garage. you get home, the first thing your phone sees is the ext. connects to it. then you go in your house, and your phone stays connected to the extender cause its at 5% signal strenth. even though the good wifi is at 98%. so you have garbage speeds that might not even let you get notifications till you manually switch it over to the main wifi.

the extender got me by for a bit, but eventually i went mesh and havent looked back. far more expensive tho(100+ for the cheapest options).

I use this to extend the wifi network to the front gate (where I have a Nest Hello video doorbell that needs wifi). It works pretty well for that purpose. (The main wifi network is a Unifi mesh system.) I recently tried replacing it with a RE300 which is supposed to be stronger/better, but it actually didn't work as well, the doorbell couldn't consistently pick up the network created by the RE300 (using the same settings as the RE220).

Do these all basically work as an additional network you have to log into? I'm trying to extend wifi to my father in laws pool area about 100-150 ft. from the house but it needs to be a little more seemless than logging in back and forth. Would mesh be the best option? Any help or recommendations would be appreciated.

I think every single WiFi repeater I have ever used does that. Personally just get a router with an AP mode or access point mode and run an Ethernet cable to it and then you get a dedicated WiFi signal connection. There's a cheap tplink ac1200 router for 40$ that works pretty good for that

Extenders are usually only half duplex, more for stability and not speed.

After some research this extender and the A7 on sale from BH photo for $50 would make a cheap budget mesh setup for smaller homes and maybe semi large apartments.
