Honestly, I bought one of these and ended up just using my finger and a damp cloth since it seems to do a much better job.
Yes, this takes practice. Apply a bit less than you expect. Another trick is to line each side with tape that can be removed after the first pass. This will take all of the excess overflow from the sides without letting it get on the surface. Then make the second pass, if necessary, to clean up the bead.
My problem is having too much caulk and then it makes a mess Frown

The camels tell me this is on the low end of its going price since May, but January through April, it was even lower, even $1.91 for awhile. I'll watch it... would come in handy for sealing the driveway.

I just use a damp cotton rag to finish my caulk.

For those who want to really get good caulking results, I suggest using a Kramer tool. It's much more expensive but consistently produces excellent results.

These sound great but realty is surfaces rarely ever line up in a square or the caulk bead doesn't protrude out enough for the tool to catch it. Best to use soapy water and get a little on your finger and make a one pass over to create a slick, seamless bead.

you can just use some painter's tape and your finger or put a disposable glove to apply caulk without the use of such a tool. place one strip of tape above the seam, and one below, apply caulk, and then smooth it out. many tutorials like this on youtube.
