I have an Alienware M15 R4. Construction is premium, mechanical keyboard, better screen, vapor chamber and mux switch.
Unfortunately the M5 doesn't have most of these things: no mechanical keyboard, screen looks to be the same (no OLED option), no vapor chamber, no MUX.

The main differences here appear to be the better build quality and more spacious keyboard (no numpad).

Anyone have a cooling pad/stand that they recommend for this laptop?

I got this for $1225, should I return and rebuy or ask for price match?
Also, there's a loud buzzing/fan sound when the graphics card is in used and laptop is plugged in.

Thanks for the post!
How loud are the fans while mining? Can it sit next to you while watching TV or does it need to be in another room because it is so loud?

And final question. Knowing this laptop, would you pay the extra $100 for the Alienware m15 version?
The fan is pretty loud imo--no way you can ignore it. But I did not have a chance to compare with the other similar gaming laptops. So maybe that's typical.
Where is the link for $100 more Alienware version?

I think you are correct . The new M15 R6 loose vapor chamber for sure, I'm not sure about the other features. M15 R4 are still available. I got mine less than a month ago.

I love the pricing, but I've purchased quite a number of Dell's gaming laptops these past five years or so, and I've had substantial issues with each one. I've had to RMA, and outright replace parts in all of them for seriously bad hardware. A huge problem has been cooling for every single model I've owned. Without an external cooler, performance drops are massive. I bought two different G-series models last year and they would consistently drop around 30% of their gaming performance within minutes in the absence of external cooling. One killed itself and had to get a new mainboard. Later, after the warranty expired, my NVMe died. Even in non-gaming situations, I've experienced many thermal shutdowns from heavy image rendering and CPU processing, which didn't even use the dedicated GPUs. Also, customer service was often dicey.

I kept falling for the incredibly aggressive price drops, hoping that things would be different. However, it seems the reason the prices are always dropping is because they're mass producing garbage products.

I finally took the dive and spent just a little more on the ROG Zephyrus and haven't had a single issue. Kicking myself for not having made that decision sooner.

Maybe some of you have had a better experience, but this is mine.

Keyboard keys are small and cramped. They're most likely suitable for small hands of children under 12.

Would not recommend this laptop to Adult.

Is it recommended to re-install the OS when you get it, or do they come pretty clean?

You can use windows fresh start to have a clean slate and then reinstall whatever things you think you need from the dell page.

Yes, it is for this reason that I think I would hold out for the Alienware M15 R5 with more spacious keyboard because it doesn't have a numpad.

Unrelated question: I have a USB-C to DP 1.4 cable and a HDMI 2.1 cable (with an external monitor, of course), which one is better? I've read somewhere that tbe USB-C to DP cable is the better one because it will eliminate the issue of lacking a MUX switch, is thag true? If yes, I should stick to the USB-C to DP cable right?
