This is pretty common for all mowers. 16 inches refers to the deck width. The cutting width however, refers to the blade length. The blade has to fit inside the deck, so it is slightly shorter...in this case by a half an inch on each side.
FWIW I've had this mower for going on four seasons and haven't had any problems with it. Still holds a good charge. It is a smaller mower with a smaller bag. It takes me about 30-45 min to do my whole yard (with 2-3 bag dumps) and the battery still lasts. I'll upgrade to an EGO whenever this one craps out.
This is similar to what I paid for it and I've more than gotten my money's worth. If you're looking to try an electric mower, it's a good entry level option.
While this is a good deal, Snowjoe (including this Sunjoe) products are hit or miss as far as quality control and durability.

I bought this recently. It's not very powerful and most of their cordless stuff is moving towards a different battery tech it looks like. I paid $200 - wish I had gone Ryobi or something instead for compatibility with more devices.
I bought this exact model four years ago from Amazon, I finally gave it up this year halfway into it's fifth growing season here in Florida when the rear wheels kept collapsing down to the minimum height level. A couple of notes for you to consider before purchasing:
The specs say it's cutting height is up to four inches. It is not, it cuts short, I had it at it's maximum height and it cuts at 3 inches. This is not ideal for St. Augustine grass, but for other grass types it might be. At it's lowest height setting, you can make your own putting green surface
It tends to be a little underpowered, especially if the grass is taller then 5 inches and wet. Be prepared to have to go REALLY slowly and possibly make a second pass.
The foam handle bar tears easily. You'll probably want to put duct tape or some thing similar to prevent it from getting destroyed completely.
I ended up getting a second battery about two years later. One battery simply didn't last long enough to cut my 1/2 acre lawn.
I picked up a mulching blade later as well. It's not great, this mower isn't a very good mulcher, a lot of the grass got stuck in the rear panel where the bag exhaust goes, and the cuts were still pretty long. There's no mulching plug that I'm aware of that you can purchase.
This is a good deal if you have a smaller lawn that doesn't need to be mowed as often. Otherwise, I'd go ahead and blow the extra money and get more powerful mower that does the job for your home.
Own this, regret purchase. Replacement blades are regularly hard to come by if you read the Amazon reviews, even during core season. Put myself on notify lists at a least 10 stores and called Sun Joe direct who had no timeline on manufacturing new blades. Gave up searching after a few months and bought a new mower.
At this size, it wouldnt be remotely appropriate for anything else but a small yard. Otherwise it will be a pain to mow.
Your looking at this all wrong. You get a longer workout so your health improves. You can cancel your gym membership. You can put that money away and retire earlier.
Dang sorry to hear people's issues with these. I have a Kobalt corded mower and it's pretty annoying due to the cord and smaller bag, but it's 100% reliable and hasn't done any of this crap you guys mention the Sun Joe does. Good to know!
Agree as well, I have a corded model of this mower and 2 wheels have fallen off, the blade constantly comes loose and if you bump anything the blade hits the deck.
Same, I have the corded version and my kids FP Bubble blower is built more sturdy.
Looking for something to cut the grass around the pool since the landscapers can't get their beast of a machine through the fence gate. My pool is about 50 meters by 25 meters with a 12 foot wide strip of grass on 3 sides. Is this any good?
I got the corded Green Works mower that was on Woot and SD last week. It arrived yesterday and works well but kinda wishing I'd seen this one first as cordless is probably a lot more convenient.

There is a mulching plug you can buy at Amazon or Ebay for $13.

This mower will do the job on the included battery. The small form factor will help maneuver around the pool, and despite the drawbacks, I'd rather go with this mower then a corded one any day.

Yes. That's how big my yard was at my previous home and that's the size mower I've used. Works well

Do the math. This is more than a foot wide. So you'd have to walk back and forth less than 15 times to mow the lawn.
