Months ago, I had the film that went over/under the SIM card and you had to leave it in the SIM card slot.
Someone mentioned to get rsim 13 since it was a physical SIM card and you can do multiple 'unlocks'
I bought the rsim 13 and so far I have soft unlocked a handful iPhones.
works on the update that came out yesterday, 14.7 as well
I left it overnight yesterday and just now I checked it, it's at 95%
I didn't use it and there is currently no sim.
I will have to test one out personally.
I will also ask my family members who I have bought this XR phone and ask them how it's going
I asked one of them about 2 weeks ago and he said it was fine. He upgraded from an iPhone 7 so it's a huge upgrade.
He loves the full screen.
I've read that the battery on the se is a bit bad.
I like the XR Because of the full screen.

This phone can be unlocked inexpensively with RSIM cards, but I do not know if I would give my non-techy parents a RSIM phone since it might lose service momentarily if the iOS version updates and the RSIM has to Edit the ICCID again to soft unlock it again, even though it takes less than a minute to do.
I say this because that's what I ended up doing for my elderly mother. I was going to give her this iPhone XR that I quickly soft unlocked via an RSIM, but didn't want her to deal with any hurdles, so I just got her an unlocked iPhone SE (2020) from the Apple Store and kept this XR as a spare and development phone. Currently I am using Mint Mobile (T-Mobile MVNO) SIM card with an RSIM on this now soft unlocked XR from TotalWireless, been over two weeks, working fine.
Basically the seller says input the RSIM into an UNLOCKED phone, input ICCID from a webpage, the reboot, and be sure "iccid is same as above ending in 39860", then take out the RSIM and insert into locked phone (iphone xr in this case).
My question is will the unlocked iphone write anything onto the RSIM so it could bypass SIM activation in another locked iphone? That sounds unlikely. Also none of ICCID in the webpage ends in 39860, so I don't know how that works.
Any instruction is appreciated.

my rsim13 has a pop up field that allows you to put the iccid number manually

I didn't use another unlocked iPhone
When I started the set up process, I put the rsim after it was telling me that the sim (tmobile sim) was not supported. Once I saw that message, I took out the tmobile sim and put in the Rsim. Once I put the rsim, a pop up field showed up and I put the newest iccid.
after that, I finished setting up the phone.
