Subway apparently closed a lot of stores today to train their workers for a new menu overhaul. A lot of articles online say they're giving away a million sandwiches tomorrow to promote the new menu.
Do you really think it cost them $10 or even $5 to make one footlong?
You should do some research on the breakdown of food cost, operating cost and labor, fact is there's an upper limit for how many sandwich a worker can output per hour, and then you pay them the hourly wage. Obviously it doesn't cost them $10, but when you really do the math, you realize Subway independent owner doesn't earn that much considering $/ time/ opportunity cost...
I can tell you with certainty they cannot make money if they keep selling $5 subway in the long run, I'm sure someone will still complain when they do buy 1 get 2 free...

Fake tuna... fake bread... "chicken" is 30% chicken... The only thing I get there is the steak sandwich... Probably not real either...
Their breakfast is quite good tho actually... but I never get full at Subway... Hence the BOGO deals they do every few months... fill up on fake bread...
Not sure if you are being sarcastic, I don't wanna get into the science of those PCR tuna DNA thing, but don't believe in everything you read in 1 single non-scientific article

If say you lose $1 per B1G1 free, you lose $1 from that B1G1 free sale. However if you sold 1000 subs at a B1G1 free, you'll lose $1 x 1000 so you'll be losing $1000 for that higher volume sale
Selling the sub at b1g1 is not the only sale the store will make. Gaining volume of sales will lead to more drink sales, chips, full-priced sandwiches, etc.

How do the stores make any money when it's B1G1 free for six weeks?
The average cost for Subway on a $5 footlong is about $2.50, so they are still making money. My guess is they are trying to bring people in the door after the whole tuna salad debacle they went through.

It is virtually impossible for the franchise owners to make money at $5 or less per footlong. Even $5 for 6 inch and they are probably still barely going black. If I was on the board of directors, I would completely abandon all unpopular menu choices except for the best sellers. I will then add in specialty copycat like Vietnamese, Jimmy J, Panera then completely eradicate dine-in options and make everyone pickup/delivery only to deal with the issue of rising wages and consumer dining behavior changes. This cuts cost and also gives a much needed jolt to this tired brand.

"According to the lab tests, the tuna was either so heavily processed that the DNA wasn't identifiable, or that no tuna at all was used."
Where's Jackie Chiles when you really need him?
