It's one thing if you already have an older Apple TV and don't want to buy a new one just for the remote. But buying a $99 older apple TV and then $59 for the newer remote is just bonkers.
Buy a silicon remote case solves all the issues - you need one that doesnt have a thick border on the touch screen so it wont affect side clicks.

Side clicks (where you click down on the left and right edges on the trackpad) are key because you can quickly skip 10 seconds back and forward without having to scrub with the touch pad.
Once you find a sensitivity that is good for you - you will fly thru movies/tv shows with ease.

The new remote is so much better than this crappy old one. I would love one of these for our bedroom but I can't go back to the awful touch remote

Currently $8.93 on Amazon. I don't use this, but the reddit OP does. I use a Harmony remote for my Apple TV 4k (1st gen) which works great, but is not cheap.
