Likely not much different that an SSD external. The cost of the NVME external drive enclosure likely higher than one for an SSD, and you're still going through the speed-limiting USB.

However I believe you can get faster speed if you have USB 3.2 or a Type-C and have NVME drive as well as NVME external backup. I considered it once for my rig but concluded against.

desktops too... popular alienware desktop sales recently were HDD, not even SATA SSD, much less M.2.... for a gaming PC

What does this comment have anything to do with this deal at all? There is no mechanical drive that can attach a nvme m.2 interface.

Nothing to do with NVME. The point was that 512GB SSDs are <$50, so it's absurd that anyone is still making the decision to sell (or buy) a laptop with a mechanical drive. Except at the high end of storage there's just so little price premium for flash and so much performance difference.
