Other than that, this is a great router as a standalone unit. I actually bought one yesterday and it should be arriving soon.

Thats not true unless its isolated to this device or asus FW. I am running a merlin ax aimesh network (with wifi backhaul) and my AX clients are clearly using AX streams.

Anyway you got one thing right, these dont have merlin support. I personally wouldn't recommend them.

Its actually modified asus firmware, but yes custom.
Gains are stability, features and constant stream of fixes and additions. Community sourced testing of betas also really adds to its stable releases.
First, this is only one pack, and that's not a good price for one pack.
Second, if you have Ethernet cable to connect multiple, then you will have the 5G-2 for WiFi 6, otherwise the 5G-2 is used for backhaul, and only that band has WiFi 6.
Ram is small, my main unit has 97% used.
But at least ASUS is still updating their firmware! Not like tp-link
