It's funny, I haven't been in the PC market for ages so I hadn't heard of Gigabyte until recently when they were attacked on the Chinese social media site Weibo by the Communist Youth League. You can read the story here [scmp.com] and here [notochina.org].

Gigabyte posted on its own Web site a legitimate marketing message that simply mentioned that their laptops were manufactured in Taiwan and not China, and that they were proud of the quality control there.

These impish young people in China, with the full backing of the Chinese Communist Party, were offended that Gigabyte would dare state that Taiwan manufacturing was better then China manufacturing. They swooped in to bully Gigabyte into shutting up. Sure enough, within days of them posting this to Weibo, Gigabyte laptops disappeared from all e-commerce sites in China, and Gigabyte had to issue a groveling apology, as if they had committed a mortal sin in talking about "Made in Taiwan".

For those of you who don't China-Taiwan politics,Taiwan is a tiny country where many of the Nationalists who fled China after the 1949 Civl War went after they were defeated by the Communists. While the Communists proceeded to murder over 65 million of their own citizens and engage in human rights abuses that continue to this day, Taiwan became one of the economic powerhouse in Asia.

Now that China is become an economic force in itself, it is brainwashing its citizens to view Taiwan not as the independent country it's been since 1949, but as a "renegade province" to one day be invaded and "reunited".

I don't know if you're offended by China's increasing dominance over manufacturing, but I sure am. When I see a deal like this for a Made in Taiwan laptop, I'm going to jump at it and I'm going to tell everyone to buy it, if only to prevent China from taking over everything.

If China manages to take over chip manufacturing and ODM production, that will be a death knell to this industry that America invented. Taiwan is the thin line that's protecting us from ourselves.

That's enough to get me to buy Gigabyte from now on (and thanks to the OP for bringing up this deal).

True, over 100W not likely atm. But sometimes some people want to go to café or office to work (not gpu intensive works ofc) and not having to bring the gigantic power brick.

I have the old aero 15x and it's a bummer not being able to bring small charger when going to café or office - though the battery is excellent, cant last the whole day working. So i was really hoping the new one had 100W pd usb c atleast like the other gaming laptops that offer it. Well thats just my point of view.

OLED on a laptop sounds like a terrible idea. Every OLED phone I own has burnin, would be far worse on a laptop that is on much more than my phone screens.

The motion clarity and response times of OLED are typically better than IPS too. Since the response is basically immediate I feel a 60fps OLED has motion clarity about on par or better than a high refresh IPS

As long as they use some kind of pixel shift or other screen protection it's fine. My desktop PC has been hooked up to an OLED TV for years.

Are brightness, contrast and color gimmicks? Those are far more important for creative things than a high refresh rate. 60hz is fine for non esports gaming, I don't see anyone complaining about 60fps PS5 games.

And for people that stare at a screen for 8 hours doing non-creative, non-gaming things, I would think 300Hz would be a benefit in that it reduces eye-strain and makes moving around the screen more enjoyable.

Is that a gimmick? I think you might mean "priorities" instead of "gimmicks". You feel 300Hz display is not a priority for you (a content creator), but it may be for a different type of user.

I've briefly used a 300Hz Alienware laptop and I thoroughly enjoyed the 300Hz screen. If it's an option on my next laptop, you can bet I'd choose it.

I have an OLED phone, am typing this on an OLED laptop, and have an OLED 48" as my monitor. I black out everything as much as I can, but not because of burn in. I just don't want to stare at a huge, bright light all day. No way I could use a large LCD for that. Then there's all the grey that is life on an LCD. Finally there's the wonderful colors of an OLED.

Anyway, I'll probably buy this to replace my 4 year old Alienware.

I found that 60hz sucks on a CRT but is fine on an LCD or OLED. I do want 120hz, but mainly because it's divisible nicely by 24, 30, and 60, and I'll get that on my big screen where it matters.

I work all day on a 60hz mac, but my gaming PC has a high refresh screen and I had a 240hz Zephyrus laptop before. It is nice, but there's a reason I switched to an OLED laptop. Most stuff I plays is like RDR, AC, Final Fantasy, etc. I don't play online shooters or much online stuff at all. For those single player AAA games, the screen on an OLED laptop is just a better experience to me.
