Also note that even unmanaged switches support adaptive load balancing which is arguably a form of LAG.

Link Aggregation (LAG) requires 2 devices that support it to correctly aggregate 2 or more links. In your case if you saw an increase in latency it was not configured properly or the wrong devices were used.
