"Reference" in audio terms is generally referred to a speaker that is flat or "uncolored" in nature. It's a pure-even balance in tone/sound. The idea is that in recording studio audio-engineers are recording and listening to the pure and direct sound, and tuning it as desired for their desired mix. They do not want any bias (such as bass or highs) that would have them tune the mix differently that how you're hearing it. This is my understanding of where "reference speakers" were used.

When you listen at home, some people desire to listen to music as engineered, or intended it to be heard. By it's nature, "Reference" now used as a marketing term to imply the above definition. As a counter example, some speakers have more bass bias or have louder highs in their default configuration (think cheap systems) - so the term "reference" can mean something to potential buyers. As music tastes are subjective, whether this appeals to you or not is up to you.

I will say, that to my ears, these speakers are well balanced and flat and are pleasing to me. Just know they're not in the same price league as recording studio reference speakers or really high end home audio.

I've never heard the RC253, but I have the RC263 and it's the clearest dialog speaker I've heard. English is my wife's second language and she remarked right away that she could understand dialog better than the Sony and Polk before. For me, that was worth the effort to make the space for it.

I'm looking for some opinions on the often posted bookshelf speakers: the Klipsch RP-600M, Triangle Borea BR03, these bookshelf speakers, and any other comparable bookshelf speakers.
This will be for a 2.1 entertainment system in a small room. Whats the best quality for the price? Or, what's simply the best?
You are going to get a lot of opposing opinions on this, everyone has there definition of "best quality" or "best"especially when you add "for the price".

Having heard all three I will tell you all three sound different so depending which sound you like will determine which is best for you.
On the grand scheme of things they are at the same level.

In basic terms I would describe them:
600m-bright side
BR03-neutral
Infinity-flat

I jumped in on a pair of Infintiy R263 Floor Standing speakers a couple of weeks ago when they went on sale and were posted here. I absolutely love them. They replaced a pair of Polk Monitor60's (which I now use as surrounds in the same set up). I want to replace my center channel, a Polk CS2 Series, and have been holding out for the Infinity RC263.

For those more familiar, or more experienced on this stuff than I may be, is the 2 way RC252 listed here a huge downgrade from the 3 way RC263?

I know they all go on sale every few months so I don't mind waiting on an RC263 sale if it is. The one negative on the RC263 tho is the size. It's a gigantic center and it won't fit in my console.
The rc263 are really good and are much better than the r162s. So good that i would have gotten 3xrc263 for left, right, and center if my setup allowed. I havent heard the rc252

TLDR;
Ordered the R 12 SW, goes on sale annualy maybe 2-3x the specs and reviews look good and missed the sale last few times.

I Have two budget Atmos configs;
MBR sitting area 5.1.2 Jamo s 8 series($250 for 5.0) & Sony as heights, needs a SW, Onkyo TX-NR676
Great Room 5.1.4 MICCA,In-ceiling JBL,Polk 12" PSW505, Pioneer VSX-LX303

The $180/$220 Jamo S 808 and 810 athesticallt match the series perfectly and would of been good enough for MBR (8" - 10" but only 150W) sitting area but the R 12 @ $179.99 w/free s&h 300W RMS/600W peak is night/day

Spending 80% of day in MBR with newborn and family so finally unboxed the Jamo 5.0 s 8 series set had in garage for a year and half when it was $250?

Agreed. On a whim, I purchased the RC263 for $160 a while back. The RC263 was so much clearer than my NHT AC-1, that cost 3x as much 20 years ago, that it was shocking. I did not realize what I was missing. I thought my existing center was fine.

My wife even noticed the difference.

Unfortunately, the RC263 caused me to replace all my HT speakers (all matching NHT) with 4 R162 + 2 R263.

The improvement was not as drastic, but I think they sound better.

That's what happened to me too. I had a basic hitb and already tried upgrading the center with a open box Klipsch that wasn't even a center but was bigger than what came with my glossy Yamaha set... never really happy with it so as soon as I set up the monstrous rc263 I knew it blew the rest away.. then came the r162s and then the r263s and as of last fall the r12. I know material things won't bring me joy, but the sound these give me, I'm just...it's... I am happy.

Well Hell, I've been looking for something to set up in my living room, would a set of these with a sub be a good starting set up? I have nothing right now and am not anywhere close to an audiophile.

I would absolutely upgrade my Infinity CC3 for an RC263 but it is HUGE and won't fit where the center is below our TV... And placing it on the top of the stand with the TV would block a good portion of the bottom part of the TV Frown

You don't need to be an audiophile to enjoy 5.1! It is however a gateway to 5.2, 5.2.2, 5.2.4, 7.2.4 ☠

TV is simply on the stand and not wall mounted.

Audiosciencereview did an in depth testing of the 162's and rc263 and they tested very well and flat. Excellent speakers for the $ and when they go on sale like this they are hard to beat for such a well performing speaker.

I did mention you will have "opposing opinions" and even mentioned "for the price" plays a role.

If a "test" tells you what "sounds" good to you, by all means go by what "Audiosciencereview" says.

All I'm doing is giving my opinion based on actually listening.
