When you listen at home, some people desire to listen to music as engineered, or intended it to be heard. By it's nature, "Reference" now used as a marketing term to imply the above definition. As a counter example, some speakers have more bass bias or have louder highs in their default configuration (think cheap systems) - so the term "reference" can mean something to potential buyers. As music tastes are subjective, whether this appeals to you or not is up to you.
I will say, that to my ears, these speakers are well balanced and flat and are pleasing to me. Just know they're not in the same price league as recording studio reference speakers or really high end home audio.

This will be for a 2.1 entertainment system in a small room. Whats the best quality for the price? Or, what's simply the best?
Having heard all three I will tell you all three sound different so depending which sound you like will determine which is best for you.
On the grand scheme of things they are at the same level.
In basic terms I would describe them:
600m-bright side
BR03-neutral
Infinity-flat
For those more familiar, or more experienced on this stuff than I may be, is the 2 way RC252 listed here a huge downgrade from the 3 way RC263?
I know they all go on sale every few months so I don't mind waiting on an RC263 sale if it is. The one negative on the RC263 tho is the size. It's a gigantic center and it won't fit in my console.
Ordered the R 12 SW, goes on sale annualy maybe 2-3x the specs and reviews look good and missed the sale last few times.
I Have two budget Atmos configs;
MBR sitting area 5.1.2 Jamo s 8 series($250 for 5.0) & Sony as heights, needs a SW, Onkyo TX-NR676
Great Room 5.1.4 MICCA,In-ceiling JBL,Polk 12" PSW505, Pioneer VSX-LX303
The $180/$220 Jamo S 808 and 810 athesticallt match the series perfectly and would of been good enough for MBR (8" - 10" but only 150W) sitting area but the R 12 @ $179.99 w/free s&h 300W RMS/600W peak is night/day
Spending 80% of day in MBR with newborn and family so finally unboxed the Jamo 5.0 s 8 series set had in garage for a year and half when it was $250?
My wife even noticed the difference.
Unfortunately, the RC263 caused me to replace all my HT speakers (all matching NHT) with 4 R162 + 2 R263.
The improvement was not as drastic, but I think they sound better.

If a "test" tells you what "sounds" good to you, by all means go by what "Audiosciencereview" says.
All I'm doing is giving my opinion based on actually listening.
