the photos are just stock photos. klein has definitely outsourced a ton of stuff to china, and im sure they havent necessarily scoured all of their product photos and made sure they are updated to reflect that. the photos in the reviews showing what people received confirm that they are made in china.

All taps can break, regardless of where they are made. To be able to hold a cutting edge, they will also be very brittle, so if you put sideways force on them or too much twisting pressure, like if it binds and you don't clear the chips, it's potentially going to break.
But I think that would be rare in a plastic or sheet metal application and even if it does break on you, removal of the broken bit won't be nearly as difficult as, for example, from an engine block.

One thing to note about the more expensive cushion grip model is that it comes with two taps. if you had to purchase the additional tap, You are better off getting the more expensive model. Better grip + internal storage for the second tap. Effectively the same cost

Scroll down to Product Information and notice the "Country of Origin China." The price increase is for the extra taps.
The Klein replacement taps from Amazon are also made in China. Our electrical supply house still has the replacement step taps made in the USA. Personally, I use the tap size I want in a cordless drill with a little wax that is exponentially faster.

Not everything made in China is junk, but most of the outsourced products are less than when manufactured in the USA to continue profits over quality. Since profits are why they outsourced to begin with, to continue same with ever increasing wages for Chinese skilled labor, nobody will notice a 10% reduction in cobalt, etc. that allows the CEO to get his/her bonus.
