The location of sternum straps.
The width of the base of the back

For a kid's school backpack, you are right. For these types of backpacks, outside of the cut of a shirt, these are probably the items that benefit the most from gender-specific design.

I've owned a Deuter pack for 15 years now. I've sent it in for multiple repairs all of which have been from incidences that other manufacturers would have said, hell no. Deuter has repaired my pack every single time, no questions asked. They've even sent me free promo schwag, such as shirts and hats. Love this company so much! I will never buy another bag unless it's Deuter.

Did you need proof of purchase? I've got one also probably going on 15 years old and the buckles are failing. Perfect otherwise and love the air frame.

Kind of reminded me of a Granite Gear pack at first. But it's a 30 L so fairly small, climbing pack, nevermind. Interesting. Look at those photos. The REI Outlet listing doesn't have any of the extra photos. Any way to see the bigger versions of those?

Torso length, which matters if there are both shoulder straps and a hip belt. But it's not as crucial on small packs since the hip belt isn't as important. I see they don't list torso length here. Often a range is given. Maybe Deuter's site has something.

I looked up REI's own Trail 25 pack and they list both a women's and men's but they have the same torso length. It says: "contoured foam in the harness provides a women-specific fit". I think that can only mean the shoulder straps are shaped differently. The waist strap on that one is just a thin strap.

I got a smaller size pack once (of 2 sizes in the same line) not looking at the torso length and it didn't fit great because the torso length was a little too short for me.

Fair price for a minimalist bag. Don't love the roll too and the clips for it are narrow. If you are climbing, a decent bag. If you are hiking, get something else that has a proper hip belt.

Do you need original receipt for repairs? I love my Deuter bag, and also have 15 years on it. Needs some minor repairs that would make a big impact! TIA!

I ended up with a more traditional 27L Mountain Equipment bag with a $3 filler for free shipping at $51. But thanks OP for reminding me that REI Outlet exists. I always forget about them…our only REI is in a part of town I never visit so it's never top of mind.

Search clearance items and they have a ton of useful stuff under $10.
