If you don't know Drop.com, they used to be known as Massdrop.com. They have been around a long time. Reputable company. Used to focus on organizing group buys to direct ship products to you from vendors at wholesale prices. Now they just get decent prices all around.
If you're familiar with the Sennheiser GSP 500, GSP 600 or Game One headsets, this is better version of them all.
I've had Game Ones for years and bought the PC38x for $170 last year. Even though it's cheaper now, I don't regret the purchase. Sound reproduction is better than my older Game Ones. These are really great open air headphones, mic is very good too. My personal favorite thing about the mic is the manual shut off by swinging the mic arm upwards.

However, one of the biggest differences is the purpose. This is a gaming headset and includes a really high quality microphone with Sennheiser quality speakers and build.
1 black band = mono (single channel)
2 black bands = stereo (2 channels)
3 black bands = stereo plus mic input (3 channels)
Sorry if I wasted anyone's time!

Tempted to grab this, but if the mic muting mechanism is still a weak point, then may be better off with a simple USB mic.
A few years later, I swapped out for a Razer Megalodon USB headset and the audio quality seemed so much better. (Realistically, it was just louder). However, the mic was hot garbage and Razer quality put me off of their products for years to come.
I replaced them with the Sennheiser PC 360 and they sounded a lot better than I remembered the PC 350s sounding. Same great mic and comfortable fit.
I was pretty young and finding info on the internet wasn't quite as easy as it is today (2008), so I didn't put this all together at the time. The original pair of PC 350s had a 150-ohm impedance. This meant that I needed to have a good sound card or amp that is able to deliver enough power to drive the headset. I was just using onboard audio and it just wasn't enough.
The next headset (PC 360) dropped the impedance down to 50-ohms. This made them even easier to drive so my onboard sound card didn't struggle as much and the headset sounded much better.
After some personal research and trial and error, I settled on an ASUS Xonar DGX PCI-E GX2.5 soundcard that was $20 at the time. This made a massive difference. This sound card had different power modes depending on the impedance of the headset you're using. I was finally able to get the power and sound quality from this headset.
Sennheiser seems to be lowering the impedance on these gaming headsets with each release. This one is down to 28 Ohms. However, to get the most of out them, you really do need a sound card that can drive them.
I'm currently using the ASUS XONAR SE 5.1 Channel 192kHz/24-bit Hi-Res 116dB SNR PCIe soundcard with a Bravo headphone amp and I've used, recommended or gifted many pairs of PC 350, PC 360, Game Zero, Game One, PC-37x, and PC-38x over the years.
This isn't an audiophile review, I have a different pair of headphones for that. This is a great gaming headset with a great mic. Given the lowered impedance in this model, it's easier than ever to get quality sound out of these things. However, if you want to get the most out of them, I would recommend not using /most/ onboard audio with them.
Thanks for reading my blog.
Yep it's a known issue with that system

You'll get better value out of the PC38X than the Jubilee 58X if you're plugging directly into the DualSense controller. Much lower impedance and the DualSense can drive the PC38X easily. I came from the HyperX Orbit S (uses Audeze's planar magnetic drivers) and the PC38X are better IMO. When I first used the Orbit S's, I thought they sounded better than other headsets but didn't blow me away. The PC38X's impressed me so much on first listen that I actually had a visceral reaction and put a huge smile on my face. My buddy got both the Penrose and the PC38X, but ended up keeping the Penrose due to his preference to wireless. He thought the PC38X's sound and mic quality were superior. For me, once you go open-back, there's no return to closed-back.
Unfortunately, I cannot loosen the clamp even after owning since launch. Any other tips besides placing on something for a long time?
There is a video on you tube the guy shows you how bend them just enough for a nice fit.
I tried using them for Discord, but the microphone is barely audible, even with everything turned up to max. The sound is also very low, even if I turn it up to max. I have a built-in Audio card (ASUS ROG Motherboard).
Thanks!
Some headphones have boosted bass(fidelio x2) and/or narrower sound stage for those intimate vocals (sennheiser hd6xx). Others are flat with a wide soundstage and makes them perfect for gaming.
x2s are great for gaming if gaming is mainly single player open world type stuff. They have an awesome soundstage but that boosted bass and lack of detail makes it a no go for say competitive fast paced games.
the 38x is just a different animal and more balanced which will be better for some games some music genres and worse for others.
It just really comes down to how the drivers were tuned be it gaming or not. A good recent example is the HD560s - top performer for gaming under 200 and ...it is not a "gaming" headphone.
