So, when you are at these expensive hotels, are you staying within the hotels all day to get your maximum value, or do you go and explore the place where the hotel is located? If you are out for 8 hours, isn't the "inherent value" essentially 1/3 of what you claim it is? I am not trying to be argumemntative but trying to understand how one can secure maximum value at expensive hotels.
I'm sure there will be a mix of on-site vs off-site time. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't ever pay $1,200 per night for a hotel but I have also spent 50k Marriott points at a $300/night hotel so I'm just saying this transfer can be worth it IF you have a specific redemption in mind. Me personally I don't generally care about what the room rate is really to feel like I get good value from my points. I don't try and maximize point redemptions above all but rather is X Marriott points worth it to me to spend at this place when comparing it to other alternatives. Some times it is, some times it isn't Big Grin

What is your take on the Amex Platinum card which now offers 150K points (via cardmatch) but has a stiff annual fee of approx $700?
Personally I think the increased sign up bonus offsets the increase in the fee. I don't travel enough anymore really for the AMEX Platinum to make sense but darn that sign up bonus is amazing. Only catch is you only get it once per lifetime so make sure it counts!

The AF increase was unfortunate, and the stuff they added to the card doesn't justify the increase, imo. With that said, if you can make good use of Amex points, it is a worthwhile offer to go for - just be sure to get one of the offers that includes the 10x/15x Shop Small bonus in addition to the 125k/150k 'regular' sign up bonus. And check FlyerTalk's Amex subsection to find ways to use the 2x $200/calendar year airline credits.

Isn't "lifetime" in terms of credit card life as in a cat or dog's life? I think a credit card life is 10 or 20 years at max. But, am not certain.

I don't think anyone at this point knows how AMEXs once in a lifetime rule will actually play out.
