New GSM FAQ https://blog.tello.com/news/gsm-m...customers/

Once you give StackSocial your money and the sale goes through, you will get a redemption link on your confirmation page. When you click that, it reveals your license code (which you'll need when you go to Tello to tell them you bought this) and all of the following instructions:

Please follow the steps below to redeem your purchase:

Click Here to watch a step by step video of the redemption steps [youtube.com]
  1. Click the Redemption Link above
  2. Make sure Unlimited Talk/Text + 8GB LTE Data + Free SIM is selected and hit "I want this plan"
  3. Create your account with tello.com by clicking Create a new account
  4. Enter your name, email address, and password and select to agree the terms and conditions
  5. Click Join Tello
  6. Copy and Paste the above Coupon Code into the Coupon Code Field and Click Apply.
  7. Select either to get a new phone or use your old phone, Click Get Started
  8. A credit/debit card or Paypal will be required for order validation
  9. After you have placed the order, you will receive a free Tello SIM with free standard shipping
  10. Once you receive your Tello SIM, activate your service at tello.com/activate
  11. The coupon is valid only for this plan, it cannot be applied to any other Tello plan or phone
  12. Stay on this plan for 3 months in a row in order to keep the offer. If you change the phone plan, the offer will no longer apply going forward"

For the above, you will want to go ahead and select "I need a Tello SIM". It will add $2 to your order, but a -$2 credit will appear to offset it, and it guarantees you'll get a SIM.

This may be a dumb question, but do I redeem from StackSocial before or after getting the SIM card? I'm not sure if redeeming is what gets Tello to ship out the SIM, or if that happens on its own and I just redeem to activate it on the plan.

you need to redeem, then tello will ship.

That's correct. Once you give StackSocial your money and the sale goes through, you will get a redemption link on your confirmation page. When you click that, it reveals your license code (which you'll need when you go to Tello to tell them you bought this) and all of the following instructions:

  12. Stay on this plan for 3 months in a row in order to keep the offer. If you change the phone plan, the offer will no longer apply going forward"

For the above, you will want to go ahead and select "I need a Tello SIM". It will add $2 to your order, but a -$2 credit will appear to offset it. I *believe* you'll be mailed a SIM regardless, but by explicitly ordering a free one it kinda makes it more likely that things will go well.

After all of that, you'll get the following confirmation info:

Quote :
Order Status
Preparing your package
GSM SIM - $0
MSISDN - $0
Own Phone - $0
Free Standard Shipping - $0
Custom Plan - $0

Please note that this delivery can take up to 3 business days.

Delivery estimates do not include the processing of the order. Observance of national & local holidays may cause delivery delays.

What should I expect?
You will receive a package containing your SIM and the Activation Code.

When the package arrives:
  1. Remove the SIM from the card and insert it into your phone. Do not turn it ON yet.
  2. Go to the My Phone section of your online account.
  3. In the "Confirm Delivery" section, complete all the required fields and then click the green "Activate" button.
  4. Enter the activation code in the field provided (the activation code is a 8-9 digit code for GSM, or the ICCID - a 20-digit code for CDMA SIMs). You can usually find these on the top of the card the SIM arrived in.
  5. Insert the Tello SIM (see here how [tello.com]) and switch the fully charged phone ON.
  6. Follow any on-screen steps provided and your phone should start to automatically activate the Tello service.
  7. If your phone does not activate automatically, please wait 30 minutes, then reboot your phone and try again. You can also manually activate your phone by following the steps provided under the FAQ at the bottom of the My Phone page.
  8. No worries! You've already received this easy setup guide by email.
  9. Start calling, texting & surfing the web with Tello!

What APN settings are needed with Tello?
When you activate the service with Tello, all your APN settings are usually set automatically. However, if you're having issues with data, hotspot, MMS or group messaging, you need to check your APN settings to make sure that they're correct.

On an Android device, you can view and adjust your APN settings in the following location:
  • Settings
  • Tap More networks (under the Connections tab, or More, Wireless & networks, Wireless Controls, Wireless Manager, Phone Information).
  • Select Mobile or Cellular networks.
  • Choose Access Point Names.
  • Tap the Menu icon.
  • Tap the Access Point you would like to check.
  • If you're adding a new APN, tap New APN and enter the following APN: wholesale

Save the APN, restart the device, and test the service.

On an iOS device, you can view or adjust your APN settings in one of the following locations:
  • Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Cellular Network OR
  • Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Mobile Data Network.

Here are the APN settings required when using an iOS device on Tello:
  • Mobile Data
  • APN: wholesale

MMS
Personal Hotspot
  • APN: wholesale
  • Leave everything else blank.

BTW - I want to thank the OP for posting this deal. I have been tied at the hip to AT&T (and their MVNOs) for years because as a single father working at a relatively rural Navy base, theirs was the only network that provided any coverage at all. Now that I'm retired and have the flexibility to explore other networks, I signed up for the 3 month 10GB $30 Mint trial to test out T-Mobile's network. Got a huge speed increase here in town (5-6x faster) and superior coverage at home... but when driving out of town on the relatively new I-69 highway, T-Mo's coverage dropped to zero. It's just the way things work here in Indiana.

My solution for when my prepaid annual plan lapses in December was to switch my primary phone to a T-Mo MVNO, since 90-95% of my time is easily going to be spent here where I have superior coverage. But I wanted a second phone with an inexpensive low-data AT&T MVNO plan in the car that I could use to hotspot so I can run Waze when driving out of T-Mo's coverage (~4MB/hr in 3D mode, so even 0.5 GB/mo should be sufficient). Turns out, I now have a twice-weekly commute as I'm taking pilot lessons two counties away, and though my AT&T MVNO works during that drive, I'll be making that trip for the next year, so I need to test T-Mo on that drive right now before committing to a 12mo plan on their network later. After looking at MVNOs that support hotspots but that cost no more than $40-50 for 3 months of prepaid service, I was down to Tello, Unreal, Ultra, and US Mobile. I has concluded that Tello's 1GB, 100 min, unlimited text plan, 6 months for $31.80 ($5.30/mo) was what I was signing up for. I really only needed it for 3 months, that the plan gave me 6 was... nice... but unnecessary.

Good thing I did a quick Tello search here on SD. 8GB, unlimited mins/texts for $2 more... sold.

So.... +1 and repped.
