You do need a separate app. Amazon plugs are easier imo.
They both work great and Kasa is much cheaper.

These (EP10) don't stick out of the wall as much, and are rated up to 15 amps. The HS103 may be rated for 10 or 15 amps, depending on how long the box has been sitting on the shelf (v1 and v2 are 10A, v3 is 15A). And the LED indicator is in a different place between the two designs. Otherwise interchangeable.

These are really good. I have one from last year's deal of placing order through Alexa. These work good as scheduled. Happy to buy 1 set more with $5 a piece.

KASA are great, I have 4 of these and about 20 smart switches, their app is the best, far better than urlhasbeenblocked or google home.
