Maybe if we didn't allow content creators to control distribution... [xfinity connection terminated]...
Lol, I'm no fan of Xfinity or most corporations, really, so I did laugh at your joke, but even as left-leaning as I am politically, I don't see the logic of not allowing content creators to control distribution of their artistic work! Like, what? You want to steal it from them or force them to sell it to every competitor? That's absurd. If a person or studio creates a show or movie (very expensive and difficult undertakings), or any form of art or entertainment for that matter, they have every right to control who they make a deal with to distribute their artistic work for profit (even including distributing it themselves on their own website, if they like), because if they didn't, they'd get paid peanuts for it, due to lack of competition over distribution rights. Consumers or government don't have any right to force Netflix (for example) to let their competitors profit off of their privately owned and funded studio's content, taking away a huge selling point for Netflix. If you wanna watch Netflix Originals, you gotta sub to Netflix, as it should be. If you want to illegally take people's creative content by force, then just pirate it I guess.

What we have is two different businesses, we have streaming platforms and we have streaming services. You best believe that one of the platforms comes up with a new idea they patent it and prevent the other platforms from implementing it, or they force them to prove they found an alternative way to implement it. And features are what they should be competing on. But no, they don't compete on that because they don't have to. We could be watching 8K remasters of John Wayne movies with the closed caption streaming to individual phones in your preferred language while the content is played in sync with your friends. But they don't have to invest in features like that because they have exclusive content.
We don't let auto companies sell direct to the consumer and they have less control over the market than Disney, and Comcast.
I am not saying steal it from them. I am saying let them decide. Do they want to own and sell content or own and sell distribution rights. They can pick whichever one they want. Or, only protect the IP for 3 years. Or get rid of the concept of customers leasing content and back the doctrine of the first sale and allow people to resell digital content without restriction.
Everything about streaming services exists because of layers of 'rights' that are truly hard to justify. It's ok if a movie isn't profitable. We will always have new content because there are more than enough people willing to make something because they are passionate about creating.
I would argue the competition is the exclusive content, if a streaming service makes an awesome show, or owns the rights, I would subscribe just for that. In my case, I subscribe for a month of Disney+ just to watch the Mandelorian. There is no way I want to pay for the ability to watch the best of everything at once, I prefer to be much more deliberate, and targeted with my streaming subscriptions. This is also a way for us to vote on what type of show the consumer actually wants to see.
Does that mean that the software that powers the platform not be patentable because features like simultaneous viewing are not part of the product? I imagine that the big players would take issue with copying new features if they actually invested in creating them. These services seem to want to control their software innovations and their content exclusivity. But those products are different yet permanently linked together.
If you don't like the UI of Netflix, but you want to watch their exclusive content you can't vote with your dollars and watch it someplace else. That's the issue I have with it. Innovation in streaming service platforms is being held back it's not as important as the content.
We didn't stand for in other industries and now I can use any phone I wish on any network I want. And the industry understands this which is why I can buy some movies on iTunes and then watch them on Vudu.
The argument that the streaming services are somehow different just doesn't make sense to me. Because they wouldn't be as profitable? I am not sure how much sleep I will lose over a company that refuses to invest in the customer experience.
so for sure I did it right this is what it says in more detail in my account:

Also, the robust competition and variety of price tiers and business models reduces piracy, as the barrier to entry is lowered for those who can't resist how much more convenient it is to stream content legitimately than to pirate it. Of course, some piracy will always exist because some people just can't or won't pay for their content, but it makes no sense to say more businesses competing with each other increases piracy.
Having 1 or 2 streaming services that have mostly all the content is the easy choice. Which then leads to lower piracy. Having a bunch of them with shows scattered among 5 or 6 is the PITA option that drives people back to pirating. I had a hulu sub for years, but then everyone pulled their shows because they thought they needed to start their own service and hulu lost all the shows I watched. So guess what? I didn't go chasing 5 streaming services. I canceled the ones I had and went back to pirating. Your logic is backwards.
