Meanwhile the third-party one can be charged separately, turned off manually, usable on all current ipads not just the air & pro models, and seems to have better battery life while offering the same feel and speed/accuracy aside from lacking pressure sensitivity.

Anyway, all those knocking the cheap $30 generic stylus', I can tell you GooG6695 is right. I have both - the Apple Pencil and a generic one from Amazon. Note - there are two generations of even the generic ones. The new ones allow for tilt detection in apps that support it but, of course no pressure sensitivity. Also, the second generation ones are magnetic to attach it to the Pro iPads and iPad Air (of course it doesn't charge that way).
If you are using a pencil for casual doodling (like I do), you will indeed not make out the difference between the Apple Pencil and a generic one - i.e. pressure sensitivity aside. It's great to give to kids. And you can use it with all generations of iPads. We have an iPad Pro, iPad mini and iPad Air. Single pencil works across all three, which is something Apple Pencil cannot do. Also, I kind of prefer the generic pencil for note taking (which I admit I don't do too much of). That's because it gives me a constant line width, which makes the text seem more legible to me. The Apple Pencil gives me varying line width. You might think that's better, but in practice the mix of thick and thin lines makes the handwriting look worse. Of course, if you have a steady practiced hand you might prefer the pressure sensitivity, but at least for me with my non-artistic hand, I prefer the consistent line widths. Not sure if there is a way to turn pressure sensitivity off on the original one, but I didn't explore too much. Also, I don't miss the tap gestures etc. If you are not an artist and not making complicated sketches, you don't need it.
Point is - for casual doodling and giving to kids the generic ones are very good options. I got mine with some coupon for $22 or something. Compared to the $130 Apple Pencil you'll be amazed at how good a value the generic ones are. Yeah, you have to charge it with USB-C but the battery lasts quite a bit.
As an aside - I'm surprised Apple couldn't get the 2nd gen pencil to work with old iPads, when generic ones do. I'm sure they made it this way cause they only have inductive charging and they didn't want people buying them for old iPads with no way to charge them. They ought to have still enabled their use for folks that have multiple iPads. I'm sure a stand-alone inductive charger for $10-$15 would have have sufficed.

My post was to try and help those on the fence save $70 if they know they will not be producing artwork of a caliber to sell, for example. I'm not embarrassed at all because I'm only an amateur graphic designer rather than a professional painter, so yes, take my opinion with a grain of salt.
