You might be tempted to think so, but the short answer is "no".
√(35.75^2+13.50^2)=38.21
2.46 inches is not longer enough to be significant. Especially when your stuff inside isn't just a skinny pole or straight stick, so corner-to-corner placement isn't quite as helpful as one might think.
[edit: and the corners are a little rounded, taking off almost an inch each, from what would be there in a perfect rectangle.]
These are awesome cases we used to use to protect sensitive electronics in rugged/dirty use conditions like construction sites.
My personal preference for short range trips is a backpack case like the savior series. For the really compact rifles (like the PC9 or SU16) I just use a regular backpack. Nobody knows what I'm carrying, and my ammo, handgun, etc goes inside a very boring plastic toolbox. AR15s, too (carbine) - pop the pins, take down into two pieces, and into the backpack they go.
If it was only for guns, communist SD mods would never let it through
