I bought this deal on black friday but with 4700U. Same build however. No complaints other than screen brightness which is only 250 nits. However, cant complain at this price.
What did you end up paying on BF? It seems like $50 off.. so not great, but there is also 5% for payal+discover and 6% CB.

Is the memory soldered in this or expandable to 16gb?
Seems like up to 64GB with 2 x 4 GB as installed.

Depends upon which series you are buying. Otherwise, it will be a too generic statement. For example, this particular series is equivalent to Dell's Inspiron 3000 lineup and between these two, I will pickup HP. Now, if you move to higher tier of both the companies, the answer may vary.
I browse slickdeals everyday and value your opinion and knowledge throughout the last 4 yrs. Lol I'm just looking for something with a decent screen 8gb ram or more (I don't think she should need more) prob 512ssd and battery life. I'm kinda torn between the Intel or amd processor tho. The gamer in me says new ryzen chips would be the way to go but father in law would like to pay for something under $500. Lol. Hard to find something like that I know.

That BF deal was a crazy deal. I paid close to 375 incl. taxes but i had to buy 2 laptops for that price. Price for single unit was around 399

The lack of information/specs. on Walmart's website drives me nuts. We are looking for a new laptop for our son who is heading off to college in a couple weeks. We are looking for something pretty specific and Walmart makes it tough when they don't list all the details.
touchscreen, backlit keyboard, etc.
I've given the details in the post. It doesn't have backlit keyboard or fingerprint reader. I think for college, you should get something slightly better than this. HP pavilion series or Dell inspiron 5000 series should be your target. They cost slightly higher for same configuration but come with better build quality, ports and features like charging using Type-C.

Kind of annoying but I think I may just buy it and, if it's not upgradeable, just return it

Wrong info. HP mention that in all their laptops and what they actually mean by that is it doesn't have a service hatch to open and replace memory. I know this for sure. If you open the bottom panel, you can update the ram, SSD and the Wi-Fi card.

Have a closer eye on Dell Inspiron 15 5515 laptop which you'll find around 500 bucks in many deals with exact same hardware but better build quality, backlit keyboard, Wi-Fi 6, fingerprint reader and bigger battery. Also, the Type-C port on that can support data, display out and charging.
