I vacuum off all the layers every 2-3 weeks. I have never rinsed the charcoal layer.
My check filter light came on 4 days ago on all 3 of my Winix purifiers. One 5500-2 and two AM80s.
Just put a generic set in the AM80s that cost $34.99 for both machines.
Happy with them so ordered another set of 2, and a set of 2 of a different brand to see if there is any difference at all between the multitude of brands with crazy names that Amazon sells.
I am happy with the ones I got so far. I vacuumed the charcoal thoroughly to remove any loose dust. The HEPA had a slight odor for 5 minutes, then it was gone. Quality of the appears good. Can't see paying more than double for these original ones.
Will see how the next 4 look. I'll use one, then have three ready for next year.

There is a permanent pre-filter (suggested washing every 2 weeks), then the thick charcoal filter filled with charcoal pellets (suggested washing every 3 months), then the very thick HEPA filter which is replaced annually. So to answer your question, no, in my experience, it has never clogged.

Many filters are sold as HEPA filters but are not certified. These may or may not meet the requirements to be as good as a certified filter. It's the same with the activated carbon. It might just be plain old charcoal. Activated carbon is cool - it's so porous that it can have a few square kilometers of surface area per gram. The micro pores will capture gas. That's why it is sold as something that can absorb odor. If the pellets are denser and heavier you may be looking at plain old charcoal. It's not going to do much for odor absorption.

That's what's frustrating about these filters. Producing activated carbon and getting HEPA certification isn't cheap but it's not nearly enough added cost to justify $80 for a filter replacement. The margin on these replacement parts are too high for my taste. Unfortunately there is physics that makes HEPA filters capture PM 2.5 where other filters either can't or do so poorly and there is physics that makes activated carbon absorb odor. There's no way of knowing if a generic filter meets this standard.

That makes this a slick deal IMO.

I have both 5500-2 and C535 models. This doesn't fit the C535 but those filters are also on sale via Amazon for $41.99 (original Winix)

All the information I found says this filter does not fit in the C545. There are several reviews stating that they purchased this filter for their C545 and it did not fit.

I run the off-brand filters on Amazon, which are this price for 2 sets. The unit sits in front of my chinchilla cage, which houses 4 animals that literally bathe in dust. The filters hold up the same as the name-brand ones. I clean the reusable filter weekly, beat out the charcoal bi-weekly, and also shake out the HEPA filter. I change mine every 6 months, but you could probably go less if you don't have dust monsters in your domicile.

Of course, it is a personal choice but with something like this that I am relying on cleaning the air of dirt, viruses, etc. I would only use a trusted brand of filter. There is no guarantee of what a 3rd party filter is made of or the effectiveness. Plus, considering it is just a once a year investment, it's not breaking the bank and I just feel safer with the known brand.

Which off brands ones worked the best for you. Can you share the link. I have the C535 and some of the generics smells.

I got in on the 2 pack Costco deal a few weeks ago and noticed instead of the reusable charcoal filter, I received disposable ones that I am change more frequently.

It's just a generic looking black sheet.

Don't know what to make of it. Is anyone else getting these?

Absolutely. A friend got some cheap filters that were billed as true HEPA and weren't and my allergies went nuts. My nose and watery eyes could tell.

I'm buying a winix that has this SKU and I'm looking at generics, nobody certifies HEPA filters when I googled, there's no agency that will do testing and grant a label saying "we have tested this and it meets our standards"

So it is sort of the wildwest in terms of third parties but anecdotally, seeing people on reddit who say they have bad allergies and using 3rd party doesn't feel different makes me think your comment about "yes they're not certified" as not quite as relevant as I might have feared.

Curious -- do you know of certification that actually exists? Or are you just speaking generally, that yes, a crap offbrand one can be really bad which I'm aware of.
