For all the negative comments from the HVAC / Electrical contractors-- unfortunately yes, you're getting cut out of work and revenue and you shouldn't have to work on my unit if you don't want to. I appreciate your industry, your knowledge & experience, and I would absolutely go with a professionally installed unit if I could afford it. Our local HVAC company quoted us $17k to upgrade our 22 year old central system (it still works, but obviously it's getting old). They also wanted almost $7k+ to install a 24k BTU mini-split. I'm sure this is all chump change for some, but I just don't make that kind of money.
. I'm thousands ahead by doing this myself. When my two units do fail or wear out they will most likely be repaired or replaced by ME. If I had to guess, I'd say the indoor unit's fan bearings will be the first thing that needs replaced, followed by the outside fan bearings. I'm up for the challenge when it happens.

$400 of electrical. $150 permit (might as well toss in work for a 50 amp car outlet in the garage). 70' of conduit to the other side of the house. Code for me is needing service outlet required near the hvac unit. Archaic code, but its code.
$1600 for the MrCool and cover. Installing the air handler and drilling the hole is easy. Tighten up the connection to torque specs. Wrap pipe. Then somehow bend it into the covers, which is actually a little difficult. Then you're pretty much good to go. You will just have some extra coil near the unit but I have HVAC line tape I used to wrap it to make it more discrete. I might build a box around it in the future.
I probably won't ever service this if it breaks, I'll probably end up buying 4 new units before breaking even vs those premium installed brands Mitsubishi or Daikin. I didn't need to go to harbor freight and get tools to flare and vacuum my pipes.
120v vs 240v work is about the same. It's just a heavier gauge wire for 240v. For those saying plugging it in.... sure it might work. You'll probably trip your gfci all day. But I say you're better off just installing a new outlet or hire an electrician to do it.
Also called around to get some professional quotes because that was the route I was going to go, most companies were 3-5 months out to even send someone to estimate. Didn't want to wait to December to get AC.

The voltage is set. 120 volts, 60 Hz. We all have that... in the states anyway. The current is a variable that doesn't really care about voltage though.
A 12 volt DC car battery can burn a car to the ground when a mutton-head installs an amplifier improperly. 120 volts can burn your house to the ground. It can do it when someone who ALMOST knows how to do it right does not do it right.
Another, less catastrophic outcome would be that the wires don't overheat to ignition but this mini-split AC unit has to work harder and then it fails. Now your easy wall plug idea just cost you a grand. Try running electric equipment on one of those thin, cheap, orange 100 foot extension cords. The motor on your Makita (fill in random saw type) saw will die if you work it hard and hot.
The deals on this site are pretty good. The irrelevant, tangential arguments are pointless.
Full disclosure. I'm not wealthy. I work with voltages from zero (often due to an unfortunate dead short) to 5vdc, 12vdc, 24vcd/ac, all the way up to three phase (which I do my best to avoid.)
So can it and get back to finding me an external SSD for my XBox.

My highest quote for a 12k unit - $5700. Lowest quote - $4800.
I could buy this unit 4 times over and still be ahead of the game. While I respect the technical skill that HVAC professionals have, I can't imagine paying a minimum of $3800 more for a few hours time. If this has an issue and they refuse to work on it (though I am installing a proper disconnect) - I can literally just buy another one and still be WAY ahead of the game.
