The mx500 is a far superior product. The samsung you linked is QLC. Inferior tech that's cheaper to manufacture.

Is this a sign the mining drives are no longer in short supply? The size is nice for the price.

I'm looking for a portable SSD, but doing the math I'm finding an internal SSD such as this + a 2.5" external enclosure would be cheaper. What are the downsides of using this in an enclosure as a portable drive?

I'm replacing a 3.5" 1TB external HDD I have that's so old it's USB2.0 and requires a power adapter. I'm not nitpicky about SSD speeds since anything will be better than my drive now, so long as it's reliable I'd go for it.

You can look it up on crystaldiskmark but there isn't really a debate. QVO is an econo line and the MX500 is a performance drive, and one of the best ones at that. It does have some endurance problems, so it's not the best for enterprise use.

Maybe avoid the 2TB MX500. Failure rate seems to be fairly high. People complaining about DOA. I've personally seen 3 drives arrive dead.
Just a word of caution.

With a good external enclosure, probably not much. If you go with a cheap external enclosure, it's a crapshoot. Some work fine, others might have issues with the USB interface, others might have issues recognizing the drive, and each of those things could happen to different cases from the same manufacturer.

I bought a couple of sub $15 O-RICO enclosures a few years ago: one of them worked perfectly for anything I put in it, the other one was a dud and was going to take 43 hours to transfer about 30GB of data from one SSD to another.

It is not about benchmark, it is for life span... The QVO is about only 1/4 life ...
