Avoid. While a good deal they make garbage. Had their top end Eliptical that died inside of three months. They apparently got tired of sending the repair man and sent another entire Eliptical. It was very evident it was redesigned with much thinner metal and was physically smaller despite being the same model. Shocker, right outside of warranty it died as well. I'll never buy another product of their. There are only two rowers you could consider, Conecpt2 or Waterrower. I bought a City Row branded waterpower but you can buy a plain Jane directily from them for as low as $900. It's wood and plastic, nothing to break. Take care of it and it will last decades. No magnetic resistance crap to break on you. Also can check Facebook or Craigs list for used ones in your area.

I have direct experience with the C2, Xebex 3.0 and RW200/500.

A C2 and Xebex 2.0 or 3.0 are the most comparable for price, performance, value and longevity. My RW500 lasted exactly 15 minutes before the magnetic resistance disc failed. It took me 6 weeks to return it. NordicTrack was a nightmare to deal with.

If you are willing to spend $600, I would highly consider t he Xebex 2.0 non-smart connect for $749. At the $1k range, a C2 is the best you're going to get with the Xebex 3.0 not far behind.

lastly, if you are not in that budget, the sub $500 rowers are all garbage, even for the most recreational/intermittent user. The money would be better spent on an airbike if you want maximum cardio for dollar.

It's just me, but I would not recommend a rower if you've had lower back surgery. Poor rowing technique can potentially aggravate the lower back. Even with good rowing technique, depending on the person's technique, the lower back can feel it. Even though the rower predominantly hits the legs, it also will incorporate the back.

Plenty of other cardio equipment that will be less taxing on the back, such as a stationary bike.

My local Best Buy's has the hydro row set up for demo purposes. I love how silent it is compared the concept2/air rowers.

Probably not if you've ever rowed on a concept2 or a water rower. However, it will give you a general sense of rowing machines, and if rowing is something you may enjoy.

Edit: @samsungs70 .. Even better, if you have a local Orange Theory, sign up for their 1 day trial membership, and ensure that the instructor will incorporate the water rower into their class. This will allow you to test out if rowing could possibly be for you.

Also, they sell factory refurb units if you're looking to spend less.

I was a runner who competed at 135-145lbs, and the combination of age (42 now), bad genetic luck, hard training, and ballooning up to 200lbs has made it so I can't run for long without major pain anymore. Burns calories almost as fast as running does, and doesn't take hours to get a decent workout like walking does. Between changing how I eat (basically keto) and daily rowing, I've been losing about 4lbs per week so far.

That's the thing: seems like I can shift focus to various muscle groups when rowing, depending on what I want to work most, by changing when I start bending my elbows in the pull, how much I lean forward and back, etc.

I'm concerned there aren't enough places to hang clothes after the first 30 days of use.
I've been using on of their cross-country ski machines for decades. It holds plenty of clothes.

Just chiming in to say congrats and best wishes on your journey, that's awesome.

As a competitor myself (I powerlift and bodybuild - 35 years old but compete in open class); the road back from an injury or a slump is a hard one to overcome. kudos to you.

Well done, I was considering this for a temp. place I'll be at. Appreciate the fragility feedback, as further review shows a machine weight of <100lbs and user recommended weight of <250.

I'm in one of my better shapes now at 6'2" 230 but from all the desk chairs, ladders, recliners, massage chairs, exercise equipment and other furniture I've been through…one of the best measures of quality is user weight. At 230, I'm looking for a machine that supports up to 350-400 if I want it to last a few years.

I have a Concept2 model c still running strong. It stands in its end when stored which doesn't take too much space. You can even hang clothes off of it when it's standing.

I'd row a few hundred meters on it and see how smooth it is. You can also check the monitor to see how many meters are on it (and the machine itself, assuming it's the orig monitor). Check for physical damage, etc. And I'm sure there's better advice from pros if you do a search. And make sure to check out the FB and other forums, youtube videos, and competitions, etc on the C2 website. Good luck!
