Dang that is a nice price .. A part of me kinda thinks I should have waited and went for this deal today vs the 5900x I grabbed months back .(and it was a pain to get the 5900x even at Micro Center )

Kind of wish I got 5800x at this price but I needed a processor and don't really need more than 6 cores for my use case. Also more money towards gpu. 8 core is supposely future proofing but next gen will be another big IPC increase.

I was able to get BestBuy to price match and use a bunch of rewards points about to expire. And now I don't have to drive185 miles to go get it.

5800X is good if you have plans to keep your computer for 5+ years. I usually upgrade the desktop every 5 or 6 years so it made sense for me. Took a chance on an open box for under $300 and it worked out nicely.

Yea, it's true. Cpu upgrade is not that necessary. 4790ks are still rocking these days. $300 is a great price. I also bought open box mobo at microcenter. Works well.

You're lucky. The two closest Best Buy's to me won't price match Micro Center. Had to go to the one 20 miles away for them to be willing to do it.

if it's especially for gaming, you won't be futureproofing that much with extra cores especially if you don't see the benefit now. like you said, with IPC increases (and other technological advancements), extra cores themselves right now won't really net you the benefits.

i can really only see the 5800x as futureproofing if you plan on doing other workload that will actually utilize the extra cores in the future (but don't want to spend more money later to upgrade).
