It really depends on the HVAC system and what it's designed for. Lower end and older ones are typically not built to handle the higher MERV filters. Newer and better ones are built to handle it without issue, though. For example, my HVAC air handler has a sticker on it that specifically says:

It's common sense if there is the same amount of pleats then the higher merv would restrict airflow, but most higher merv filters have more pleats thus more surface area which allows more air flow evening out the loss of air flow.

Makes sense that higher MERV# chokes the AC but also keeps out small particles from recirculating-- that said what's the recommended "right" amount of balance of cleaning the return air vs not stressing the central air?
I've been using MERV 11 for 25+ years on the same AC. Curious what the experts say.

Higher MERV filters don't just add more pleats, they're often thicker and they definitely do increase the air flow resistance. There's nothing wrong with going higher MERV as long as it's within reason and within the specs for the HVAC unit. Going too high for the HVAC will put additional stress on it, though.

I agree, but I'm saying the higher surface area reduces the air flow resistance somewhat.

Older system what MERV would be recommended?
Most common recommendation I've seen is around MERV 8. It provides some increased filtration over the "basic" cheap filters, while still being moderate enough that it won't tax most HVAC units. If you have a higher end system, it can likely support a little higher. You can always try searching for details on the unit itself, or googling for it. Mine (newer) has a sticker saying "Recommended Filter: MERV 11", for example.
Calm down, MERV 8 is about a medium range for filters and pretty universal decent quality on filtration while not hurting most HVAC systems. You start going double-digit MERV, you better know what you're doing or have a hospital-level HVAC. Or you go to the fiber glass (MERV 4?) and it's not doing jack

Oh No...here comes the AC know-it-alls explaining the good, the bad, and the ugly of MERV's, overworking your air handler, etc... Every home air filter thread on SD gets infected with them...
In for 12x24x1 . I wonder if this is the same ones from Woot sale a few weeks ago and they also didn't have 20x30x1 in the sale (or sold out). I got my 20x20x1 safely but the 12x24x1 was beat up beyond salvageable so I sent them back. Hoping better luck with this batch, and hoping for a sale on 20x30x1 since I need two of those for each change.

"Additional stress". In what sense? A MERV x is comparable to a y month old normal filter?
What kind of numbers are we talking here? How many watts? How much life reduction? How much additional maintenance?
This is what I'll tell you, last time I used cheap fiberglass filters, my whole house smelled like glue and I had to dust twice as much.
I like to defer to experts, but sometimes I feel like experts are just repeating what they hear or see in their own repair experience.
Two examples: 1. Water installation experts saying magnetic do not change how water leaves behind scale. Not true. Magnetic fields can help to keep calcium from sticking to metal.
2. Vacuum repair saying dyson break all the time when that is the only vacuum worth repairing.
A lot of time, repair people are seeing and remembering the worst case or biased cases. Who is likely yo get a repair? And how does thier lifestyle change what you see? And is it really the biggest deal. Am I better off straining HVAC than dusting twice a weeks and taking allergy medicine every day?
This is interesting. So they've achieved increased filtration with less resistance. Thank you for this. I personally need to read up more thoroughly when choosing my next filter.

Also interesting... I'd also prefer less dust and cleaner air myself. Maybe I will opt for a better filter and check it more frequently, as opposed to changing it at set intervals or when Nest thermostat recommends changing. Thanks all for the knowledge "and" common sense that I overlooked. This (to me at least), is one of those things that health and lifestyle outweigh the extra cost, so long as it isn't ridiculously extra.
seems like these have only been sold for about 6 months
You do know that Amazon doesn't mfg these, right? They appear similar to Aerostar http://aerostarairfilters.com/about-us/
I've been buying these for a while and they are Merv 8 and they are usually around 30 bucks for a six pack But right now they're 39. AIRx DUST 16x25x1 MERV 8 Pleated Air Filter - Made in the USA - Box of 6 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B5BC...UTF8&psc=1
