So I have a 100w solar panel. I have been using it for random crap where I just hook both terminals up (to, say, a 12v fan).

This charge controller is the baby step that allows me to go solar panel —> this controller>> battery and Whatever I'm powering.

Right?

Correct. I'm also using a 20W panel to directly power a small water pump, but this plus a spare car battery would be a more reliable/robust setup for relatively cheap.

ETA: Keep in mind Amazon has cheap charge controllers for about the same price;
10A $9.99 https://www.amazon.com/EpRec-Cont...r=8-3&th=1

20A $10:59 https://www.amazon.com/EEEKit-Con...s=1&sr=8-6

Correct, for one panel of 100w is perfect, if you have 2 or more panel then it is too much power for this controller to handle

My guess is that this would only work with lead acid, not lithium ion - probably not a big deal as most people shopping at this pricepoint wouldn't be dropping the money for li, but worth knowing. Make sure it will work with your battery chemistry. There is a wanderer PWM charger that does handle LI for $30 - it might be worth getting that just for flexibility.

FYI - this isn't even a PWM controller - it's a simple voltage sensitive switch. it turns on at 13v and off 14.2v, no float, no charge management or anything. you can get something without a case for like $1 on eBay, or a real PWM controller for the same $10.

Care to provide one that you like and why you like it? Peace

Do we really need to include "+ Free Shipping w/ Walmart+ or $35+ " with every Walmart post title at this point?
It's fine in the body of the post, but the title is getting redundant.

Thanks!! I got the 20A one. Now... time to make some sort of standalone hydroponic garden or something... 😁

I like the "free store pickup" in posts. As if most places charge to walk into their stores.

Well, store pickup isn't available, thus the "free shipping w/ Walmart+ or $35+ orders." Wink I think it's helpful to specify the free shipping minimum, since it varies by store.

Also, this deal is still available. Smilie

Right now, your 100w panel is going to output voltage and current based on the light they receive.
A charge controller basically optimizes the output to a set voltage.
Very basic models are just a switch. They literally just turn off if the voltage gets below a certain threshold. Other one are much more complex and attempt to optimize your total power deliver(Volts * Amps).

this is especially important in battery charging. If you just hook up a solar panel to a battery, it will charge the battery while there is light and hypothetically, the battery will turn the solar panel into a light bulb at night. This makes sure that your battery is always getting float voltage.

That's how they do it here. Just like every amazon post mentions the deal for students to sign up for prime.
