Chat is the key. It works MUCH better than calling or trying to do it yourself online.

While in chat:

1) confirm with the rep that the sim card you bought has the proper minutes/texts/data

2) confirm with the rep what your existing account has for minutes/texts/data

3) ask the rep to add your new sim card stats to your existing account

4) while still in chat, make sure that everything was added correctly (can take a few minutes to update) ask the rep for the totals so that it's on the transcript

5) get the chat transcript and save it

This way if there's any question at all, you have the transcript to prove what you should have.

For those activating new service, I highly recommend joining the tracfone rewards program and use a referral code. A referral will provide generous benefits such as free airtime, text, data and minutes. Search for TracFone code on Reddit.
Note: Tracfone states you must join tracfone rewards within 14 days of account creation and apply your code within that time in order to get a referral bonus.

if I buy this as a back-up... how much time do I have before I must activate it?

last time I ordered this was a couple of years ago... after I received it, I didn't open it for about 5 months and it still activated just fine.... is it still the same now?

I've used them in SimpleMobile phones sold at Walmart with zero issues. (since SimpleMobile is Tracfone anyway)

Do they have good deals for adding another 2 or 3GB of data to the phone as needed? Or am I better off just buying a 2nd card?(which comes with 3gb of data) I don't care what number is on the phone....

I can confirm this as well. I had a sim card and plan from 2017 that I am yet to activate and use. Tracfone customer service rep confirmed that neither the sim card nor the plan have expiration dates.
